found a really nice rust free stepside shortbed for $100 needs new wood. To be real honest Im not a real fan of stepsides but Im not finding any fleetside shortbeds in my area cheap enough. The cheapest one I have found so far is $650 and needs a little work. So after buying the stepside and replacing the wood, would that put me up there in the $650 range and higher so I may as well just save up for a fleetside? Let me know what you think.

i'd wait, may not be that expensive to put wood in it but stepsides are hideous and pointless i think, and if you dont like the stepside look either i wouldnt sacrifice what you like for what is cheap.

That's blasphemy! I love stepsides. They can also look better if you lift the bed a little bit off of the frame in relation to the cab. Without pix it's only a guess if it's worth fixing though. How are the floor rails?

i dont like the stepside look on the 73-87, to me that generation should only be a long box fleetside regular cab or a blazer. not a fan of stepsides, burbans or crewcabs either. my brother had a 60's dodge pickup with a stepside that looked great as a step side but rubish as a fleetside.

i do not like the step side on 73-87's either. ----- But i would like to put a 88-98 stepside bed on my 81 gmc, what do you think on that combo.
i do not mean to take over this post ... but could help dumbucket also.. ;)

my dad had a 60s stepside and it was cool i wish he would had kept it i would have it i think thay look mean

ya I will have to take a better look at the wood floor on that bed for sure.

To each his own on the stepsides ya know what they say opinons are like "bleeps" everyones got 1.You may hate em i think there wicked , put a set of inner fenders from a fleetside on the sides.,cut them down just enough so they match up to the frame and put bigger meats under there.Thats why i`m building 1 i personally think there cool bu then again thats where the opinons play 8)
thanks

Pat, Stepsides are bad... That's what got me into these trucks was my buddy's 79 stepside (May he rest in peace). The rest is history.... I'll see if I can find a pic of his truck and post it on here...

Too bad you were not closer dumbucket1, I would have traded you my short bed fleetside for your stepside - I LOVE STEPSIDES
-
If the wood is the only thing wrong with it, you can fix the bed as little as $350 for new show quality wood in oak, or $250 for pine.
If you had the tools, you could use that composite stuff from Lowes and it would never rot...
I love stepsides. It all is a personal choice though. What does the bed look like?
As far as the 88-99 stepside beds on a 73-87, I personally don't like them. None of the body lines match up, and the wheel arches are different, but that is just my personal taste.

This was my buddy's truck that got me hooked on 73-87's

hey vile your changing my mind with that pic, man I love old school grey slot mag wheels

I like 70's stepside and 80's fleetsides...something about the roundness of the 70's make the stepside look nicer. When i was looking to buy a truck i decided if it were 73-80...it had to be a stepside. 81-87 had to be a fleetside. Just personal preference is all.

Here is a red one:

yea, i love stepsides. i really wanna keep my truck mostly original, but i think if someone were to offer me a stepside bed in equal condition to my fleetside as an equal trade, i might just have to take it...
-
imo.- i don't like the way the rear of the cab shows on the stepsides.
it's got to be a fleetside or i'm not interested in purchasing one, have been offered stepside trucks under 1000. and i am NOT interested in them at all.....
