The main thing I wanted to know was why the 5.7 isnt embossed on rear of the block and what was meant by the 179 thats where the 5.7 or 5.7g should be.. Thanks Bruce

I don't think they started putting the 5.7 on until 87 or 88. Not really sure, but I know it was there by 90, I have two of them

It's a 350 not a 5.7
5.7 was not cast into the block till they started with the 1pc rear main seal
the 207 is a good block
the 207 in my truck is a 4 bolt main

cubic inch displacement was the old way of noting engine types. I am hovering around 40 years of age and remember quite well whether you had a 289 or 351 ford, or a 454 or a 350 chevy, etc....
No one but europeans used litres.  Unless you had a euro porshe or something, no one said they had a 5.7 litre engine back in the early 80's or before.
We still don't use the metric system on most things....you buy gallons of gas, a gallon of milk, football feild is 100 yards, I live 3 miles from work...etc...
I believe we started using litres in engine displacement only because GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc were exporting vehicles to other countries.

Moral of the story, my 1979 CE (common era) Chevrolet will never have on it that the 350 is a 5.7 litre.  Actually it is now a 383 CID. ;D

I have a 87 motor it has 5.7 on it , also have a 80-81 267 that has it embossed on it Also have an 010 motor in my 84 wagon has it on it too its got it on it too .I think the 87 and up had 5.7g on them prob coz of swirl heads or fuel inj. With the big air filter and oil cooler I thaught it may have been a marine motor Looks like manifolds were changed has 2 gaskets on each manifold.Prob not important but ya never know If I had the vin I could find out but nothin on the front engine pad .May have been shaved off with a deck cleanin .on a rebuild or sompthin the motor is really clean inside eh .Not sure wether to take the oil cooler off befor I put the motor in .Guess it wont hurt to leave it on but I have heard it can cause problems if it runs too cold and its sure not a desert here haha snowed yesterday..Bruce

I think the point was that at the time the engines were built, the factory did not use the metric designations.

back in the 60s,70's and early eighties if you mentioned the words: Liter, Meter or Centimeter, people thought you were a   , sissy or a commie and usually beat the crap out of you, and ran you out of town.

A 1970 LT1 was a 350 (yes it is a 5.7, but if anyone refers to it as such, they should have the crap beat out of them ;))

A 1996 LT1 is a 5.7 for historic purposes

January 1979?

If it were an industrial or marine engine the exhaust valve stems would be 3/8" instead of 11/32". The larger stem exhaust valves were sodium filled or stellite faced. While not great from a performance standpoint, they were good in terms of running heavily loaded for long periods of time. I have seen these valves on C-50 and C-60 small block powered trucks of that era also. The top of the valve stem looks the same as a standard SBC valve, the only way to tell is to take heads apart.

While this valve is not from a SBC it looks similar to the 3/8" stem HD valve installed in Marine and industrial engines of that era

That is interesting , And could  very well be what it
is I have a number for getting vins deciphered for each individual truck I dont have the vin Ill try that later on but prob wont work without the vin , not gonna take the heads off now ,but  Ill watch out for the valves with any machine work or upgrades .

<Canada>
If you want to know even more detailed info on your truck, call Chevy Customer Assistance at 1-888-467-6853 <Canada Number>. Tell them you want to know all the options that your truck has. They will mail you out a restoration packet that will allow you to decipher the RPO (Regular Production Option) codes that are on the options decal in your glove box. The packet they send will tell you EVERYTHING that you could ever want to know about your truck. BTW - you need to have your VIN number ready when you call Chevy.
There is also the same thing in the US may have to google for a number.

I have a suffix code nobody seems to know about.  I know for a fact the engine is original. 78 c20. Engine code TDS, NOT TSD.  It says TDS on the block as well as on the build sheet.

if the pad is blank

a) the block has been decked
b) it was an over the counter block
