well, yesterday was a BAAAAD day for me.  first, my neighborhood experiences a power outage...then after struggling through the day with no power, my truck breaks on the way to work.  first time in about 2 years of ownership she's ever "left me stranded".  the reason the post is called "grrr..." is because the cause of failure was a u-joint that i JUST replaced about 2 months back.  there was grease in the joint (still is), and there is no play in the rear axle yoke or the t-case.  my driveshaft got damaged when it smacked the ground (busted off the part above the groove that holds the lock rings for the caps) so now i have to get that repaired too.  i just ripped the driveshaft out of the t-case and drove 'er home.  i didn't wanna do that to her but i didn't feel i had a choice, i didn't have money for a tow rig.  she made it without so much as a grunt.  thank goodness for 4wd! 

anyhow, i know the u-joint had a lifetime warranty, but i have lost the reciept.  now i know the store has records of who bought what, but what is the best way to approach this matter?  i mean, do i need to go on the sly and just say i "wanna keep records of everything i do to my truck so i need this receipt reprinted" then go back a week or so later and say, "yea, my u-joint broke" or should i just shoot straight from the start?  i'm thinking just shoot straight from the start but i'm worried they won't help me if i don't have a reciept and i'm doing a warranty claim.

also, will the u-joint manufacturer reimburse me for the repair to my driveshaft?  i know that's unlikely, but they are the reason it's damaged.  the u-joint was properly installed and greased...

anyway, just figured i'd share my day and ask a few questions on here where there is more knowledge than i possess

Did the trunion crack as in the casting was faulty or will they blame installation error? One needle bearing laying down will cause this. Without a receipt you probably don't have much to stand on as far as reimbursment.

i'll have to go look again when we aren't experiencing a torrential downpour but it doesn't appear cracked.  yea, i kinda figured i was SOL as far as replacement but wanted to ask just in case...thanks Vile!

if a shop did the work, you may have had an advantage, but of course they're gonna say you can't prove it was installed correctly---even if you had the receipt.

yea i know...but me being a mechanic it's just not worth it to me to send my stuff to a shop...oh well, it'll cost me $75 or so to get back right again...
