Title: Cam options
Post by: nativetexan on May 16, 2008, 11:14:49 am
Okay, I know this topic has been beaten with an ugly stick, but I cant find one for my aplication.
I am about to get going on my engine rebuild. It's an 87 SWB with a 5.7L 350 small. I am going to keep it simple since it will be my first rebuild and can't afford any hickups. What I want to know is this:
What is a good cam size to put in if my heads ar going to stay stock with a new summit intake? My mechanic and my friend who is helping me with the rebuild said something mild at around 286 advertised should be good with a stock set up. What do you guys think. What have you guys used for a similar set up. Also,I wanted to go with Summit brand but, Summit only goes up to 86 for the 5.7L 350. Is this a problem or a glitch in the summit search filter. I wanted to go with Summit cause they shave alot of $$ off their cams compared to the competition.

Any new suggestions on this old subject would be awesome.

It really depends on what you want to do w/ your truck.  Ever gonna pull anything?  What kind of rear end?  Daily driver?

If your engine is throttle body which i belive it is for a 87  crane cams dont suggest anything over a 214duration, i built a 95 model 350 janurary of 07 with a 214 duration in my 95 and had to get a different computer chip the truck would not idle by itself and ran like crap untill chip swap i got my chip from tbi.com he has alot of upgrade info on tbi engines heads cams and many other options ,i believe you must produce a certain amount of vacum for tbi ,totally different than carbs, also if your local chevy dealer will give you the phone number chevy high performance center will give you alot of information on tbi builds hope this helps

Okay, now that i think of it, what about a manifold that will fit my throttle body???  ???
When shopping for one; is it the same as shopping for a carbureted manifold? Square bore, or spread??
Thanks for the input already.
Vile,
I think Im gonna go with that cam and lifter kit you posted. Thats the one I had my eye on. ;D

I just had this put in:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2DCL12%2D242%2D2&autoview=sku

It says it's about the most cam you want with a stock torque converter. It has lots of lift too it without too much duration but it's also double the price almost of the Summitt one you like. I've only driven with it a short while but I quite like it. Nice chop to it too.

listen to vilezambonie and blue82 for a tbi dont go past a 214 duration your truck wont run very good at all,i have already done this once and had to go back and change cams, the crane 2030 works excelent you just might have to change your chip, not going to have a lope to it but good power gains you can onl do so much to a tbi engine.
