Title: Greetings from the Gem State
Post by: 77IndyStepside on May 28, 2008, 10:35:18 am
Hello,

Glad to have found this site and look forward to tapping into the large knowledge base that is surely present here.  My dad bought a 1977 GMC Indy 500 Special Stepside truck new from his brother who was a dealer at the time.  I was only seven at the time - but I vividly remember that truck showing up one evening and crawling around in it.  I can remember thinking - Wow!, this thing has carpeting!

The truck has since become mine.  It's the kind of thing that you just cannot picture anyone else driving.  The special Indy paint job is long gone, but its still a GREAT looking truck - absolutely love the body style.  Running on the original motor and transmission, the thing was just built right from the start.

Will try to post a pic or two of the truck in its current state when I get a chance.

Welcome. Sounds like a good thing to keep in the family. What are your plans for it?

I would highly consider returning it to its former glory if it were mine.

That's the one!  My dad took that front cowling off pretty quickly but I have it laying around somewhere I believe.  I also have those original wheels laying around somewhere as well.  Those stripes to my memory were not paint but decals of some variety and they eventually started peeling off pretty badly.  I think that is what finally prompted my Dad to re-paint.  The truck has a custom red paint job presently.

I'm in agreement with you guys though - taking it back to this look would be a tremendous thing to accomplish - I think that it was this look that initially attracted him to the truck to be honest.

They were actually decals and they did peel.  If it were mine, I would lay them out in paint.

Laying them out in paint would be a better / more permanent solution I would assume.  I need to look through old family photos and get shots of the truck when it was new from a lot of different angles.

Welcome from West Texas. I look forward to seeing the truck.

I will try to take some shots of it tonight - photography is my second hobby!  Weather has just been too nasty the last few nights.

I posted one very basic shot of the current truck in the "Member's Rides" section.  I will add more detailed shots hopefully within the next few days.
