i have been really into classic car nostalgia (old print ads, tv ads, brochures and stuff like that from mostly the late 60's to the EAAAARLY 90's) for as long as i can remember and i use to have this ad (until mommy dearest cleaned out the closet i had my old magazines in when i was gone to the Army) of this 1978 Chevy C10 (with a 250 I-6 supposedly) pulling a GM Terex (BIIIIIG dump truck) by itself. supposedly the ad says there was a demonstration on CBS (or NBC but i think it was CBS) that showed it pulling it live. do any of ya'll remember it? what was it like? i mean, was it an obvious gimmick? i just don't think that a 1/2 ton truck with the standard gearing (which should have been in the 2's) could have moved that truck at all with a 6 cyl. i know they have great torque for being a 6 cyl but i just don't think that could have happened...i really wish i could get ahold of a copy of that broadcast...
edit, here's the original ad...seems it was a 4wd with 4.11 gears. i guess in low range it MIGHT have moved it...

Add says it was a 4x4 with an inline6. All inlines came with higher gearing also. In fact, I haven't see the first one with anything lower than 4.11's.

Rolling mass ! At the shop I worked at, one of the winners of some Mr Universe Strongman ....... contest
pulled a Cat Rock Truck across our flat parking lot for some video. That was about ten years ago.
We moved them around the yard pulling them with a 1 1/2ton forklift, Just had to make sure the brakes were released and someone was in it to stop it.
-
yea, i assume it could. and yea, in the ad it says 4.11 gears. if you look REAL close in the ad you can see someone inside it...i assume to stop it although when my friend and i were younger we use to think that they were probably driving the Terex behind the truck...

Well, speaking of older ads, i came across this jewel on "the tube;"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sThNQFKflA
i've always thought that anything pre-64ish just looked wierd and was "no good." But that yellow one really moves--especially considering the load weight.
a) i think we can agree that these trucks probably aren't the most attractive.
b) the other thing about today's marketing is they don't really use a manly voice; Every new car commercial seems like a hip-hop music video. Why do you suppose this is? Is this a good or bad thing?
So not only does the syling suck, the marketing does as well in my opinion.
c) i don't think GM even makes medium duty trucks anymore. This is sad on many other levels.
-
GM does make medium duty trucks. they were featured in the Transformers movie and there are plenty on the road today...nice commercial you found. i wish we could find more 80's full-size truck commercials. i have a few on my HD but i'd love to find more...i'd really love to find a 1983 GMC K-series commercial to go along with my truck...
-
So the I-6 usually came with 4:11 gears...is that what you're saying?

Hey you can't keep a good old GMC down! That looks like a GMC C60 dump, gotta be a 1960 model with the "jet pod" hood. This guy has a similar truck:

My uncle ran one of those C60 trucks around his farm for years.
There is an antique truck show in our area every year, and you get to see many of these big trucks from pre-1970 all in one place (Ford, Chevy, GMC, Mack, you name it).

Here is an old TV spot for GMC trucks that we know and love:

Sorry about that. Most of my cousins have their own trucks, but with the cost of gas and all.............

Yes, thank you for all the excellent links. Please keep them coming.
i am especially looking for all/any gm medium duty sites, specifically 65ish to about 98ish. Would prefer not anything pre 62ish as i feel these trucks look "alien," but i'm not absolutely ruling them out either.

I remember a TV commercial announcing the release of the 1924 Ford Model T. i can't find it anywhere on youtube though.

By the way, when was TV (and therefore, commercials) invented? Click Here (http://www.delbridge.net/feb2208). Part of my
www.ponderedthoughts.com (http://www.ponderedthoughts.com) website.
Hint: it was after the 1924 Ford Model T

You guys should beware of my attempt at dry humor every now and again. I get my wife on things like this all the time and she can't stand it. ;D
-
lol, i got it SgtDel

The 57 one was interesting, yet uncomfortable -----(white) people rapping in 1957.
But this proves rapping was around before 78.
Anyways, what i'm especially looking for is sort-of infomercial type segments on medium duty trucks if available. Sort of in this style:

i really learned alot from that film. See, people today can't teach.
-
i have the '57 one on DVD
