I've got a 1975 GMC K15 short bed 4x4. How can I tell if I have an NP203 or an NP205 transfer case?
-
What's your shift pattern? Look on the back of the transfer case for a tag. Is there an aluminum extension housing or is it all cast iron?
-
If it has a drain plug its a 205
If not a 203

You may have a NP208. Check out that page to see what you have.
-
208s were not offered until 81, 82 ish.
-
yes but lets remember swaps do happen...
-
Yes, but not useually a down grade!!!!! :P
-
well i have a 83 blazer and a 84 k20. the blazer i just got and is only a rolling chassis. that transfer case has a NP tag on it that i think says 203. the truck has no tag w/ 2hi 4hi n 4low.
-
Is the transfer case alum or cast iron?
2hi 4hi n 4low. that's the shift pattern, might be on the TC shifter knob. The link Blast gave you helped me identify mine.
-
i looked at the tag again i think that it might be a 208. cleaned it with some brake clean and it looks more like an 8.
Blazin, you said the 208's are a downgrade. what is the difference and why are they worse.
-
here's a np208, does it look like this?

They're not a gear drive unit but for regular street and offroad use they're great. If you are a serious offroader not so good.
-
As Vile said 208's for street or mild off road / plowing they are fine, I have run many of them in my plow trucks over the years. Have 4wheeled them too. I have blown a few up. The 205 is gear driven so its heavier duty is all.
-
ok. thanks guys. well i got a spare so if i blow one up i got another, or ill go get a 205 from a junkyard
-
My truck has over 400,000 on it and the NP208 is the only part on that whole truck that hasnt been rebuilt or replaced. I use mine off road and haul horses with it.
-
wow. thats a lot of miles. but the 208 is the only orignal thing still going huh? ill only be using mine to plow, minor off road and to haul car trailers, so i should be ok for now, until i put a lift in it.
-
Make sure you keep it full of oil. Thats what kills them. People let them run low of oil. My rear seal tends to leak. I replaced it but it still leaks a bit.
Yes the Transfer case and the body(sheet metal is still original but everything and I mean everything else has been replaced or rebuilt.
