Title: Theft of car anti-pollution device up across US
Post by: Lt.Del on July 06, 2008, 09:09:47 pm
Don't be shocked if you go to your truck and fire her up and it sounds like you have no exhaust...

We should be doubly concerned because any one can crawl under out babies with a battery saw and go to town.  It's not like you need a jack or anything to get under out trucks.

yeah, there has been a big problem with that around here too. I even heard about one of our local junkyards having problems with people stealing cats during the night.

i guess on my own stuff they cant steal what isnt there :D

thats nothing new, I havent hauled cars for about 5 years now but when I used to haul brand new jeeps I would have the cat convertors cut off on occasion when I would park to sleep for the night.

Platinum is going for over $2k a troy ounce.  I am glad it wasn't that expensive when I bought my wife her platinum band engagement ring.  I told her I could buy a bigger rock for the top if she didn't want platinum.  She wanted platinum.

Last fall the Manchester N.H. airport had 80 plus stolen in one night from SUVs and trucks parked there while people were off on flights

that's gotta suck...I need to replace the cats on my tahoe I think...starting to smell like eggs a little and getting poor gas mileage...where can I take my old cats to turn them in...will the scrap yard take them...and how much do you think I will get for them...I never would have thought to take them somewhere...just would have tossed them...

Chuck.

I turned in a load of scrap a few weeks ago. I had 5 cats got $75 a piece for the large 4 and $60 for the smaller one. Any yard that buys scrap metal will buy them.

I wish it were that simple.  Some states (ie: Virginia) requires them on annual inspections, if it came from the factory with one.

In other words, no cat, no drive

Missouri requires that it be there to pass inspection, although I've yet to see any of my vehicles checked for them.. Cheap solutions are to use an old cat, hollow it out and sell the guts and run the open cat (thats what I've done), or pull a couple heat shields off of a few junker vehicles and weld those to a piece of exhaust pipe to look like a cat..

PIKEYS
Families that live in caravans moving from area to area with no fixed abode. Dont pay taxes and thieve to earn money. Usually into the Tarmac/Bitumen "do ya drive mister" or Tree Surgeon sort of trade. No good at either but manage to run new vehicles with no insurance etc etc

basically pikey = low life

My buddy owns a muffler distributor and several shops throughout missouri.  he's been selling cats like crazy, especially for big box trucks, sometimes a whole lot or service fleet worth.  They'll break in at night and clean a whole business out of them.  He gets calls all the time from regular people who've been ripped off too...he's probly making out better than the crooks!

Been hearing of more gas being stolen around here lately. Drill a hole right in the bottom of a trucks tank and drain it into a 5 gallon pail. I put a locking cap on my houses oil fill. One of my plow customers lost three cords of wood right off their porch this past winter. They only come up from Mas 5 or 6 times a winter, more during the summer. It was there when I shoveled the roof, next time I showed up to plow it was gone.

Unfortunateley the fuel crisis has hit us too. Its not unheard of to have a rig syphoned overnight costing at least $500-00 a tank   :(

I just read in the paper that someone stole the bronze plaque on Daniel Boones grave. The guy cut it up and sold it to a scrap yard. The idiot was caught and arrested though. This is getting ridiculous.
