Title: Alternator Choice
Post by: my1tonrat on July 30, 2008, 09:09:54 am
I'm replacing the alternator on my 85 K-35 (454).  Just wanted to know if anyone has had really good luck or really poor luck with any brands/sources.  Also, what experience you have had with new vs. reman?

Thanks for the input.

Unless you are running huge stereos, offroad lights, dual batteries or a winch, you really don't need more that stock.  I use remans on mine and haven't had a problem, I have also used new non-GM, still no problem.

I usually buy the cheapest Reman with a lifetime warranty.  I did have bad luck with the O'reily alternators on my 78.  The first one I bought had bad bearings, and when I took it back we had to go through 4 other new ones (in the store) that all had bad bearings to get to one that was ok.  In about 3 weeks that one was making noise too, so I took it back and bought the Advance brand alternator and I have had no problems.
