Title: starter?
Post by: chevyboy1983 on August 14, 2008, 09:45:26 pm
I have a 1983 Chevy k10 4x4 I've been having a problem with it.  When i try to start it it will just click and lose total power to the truck.  I've replaced the neg. ground and the battery.  I cleaned off the positive ground from the starter to the battery but still acting up.  so if anybody else has had this problem Ive done everything that i can think of.

Well. I work in a part store, I've heard stuff like this HUNDREDS of times.  Before you yank that starter off.  Take the battery and have it checked.  We have sold lemon batteries directly off the shelf before.  If it comes back good and your cables are in good shape.  Yank the starter off and take it to a part store, let em bench test it and see what it does.  Ask whoever tests it to jump the solenoid with a screwdriver and see if it kicks the drive gear out then, in most cases, it's about cheap enough just to buy another starter as it is a solenoid.  If your starter checks good, then someone else on here may have advice.  Just my $.02

Bench testing the starter really won't yield any good results. If your connections are good and clean replace the starter.
