Title: coolant coming out the exuast
Post by: chevyboy1983 on August 22, 2008, 11:35:25 pm
On my 1983 Chevy 1/2 4x4 I've noticed that there has been cooland coming out the Y between the Headers and the tail pipe cause the gaskets are gone.  Could it be the head gasket?  I dint have any water in the oil it still runs good.  But I'm losing coolant.  Wondering if anyone else had this prob.

Definately sounds like a head gasket gone bad. check the oil and see if it looks watery and smell it if you smell antifreeze its definately a head gasket.

thanks

there is no water in the oil.  Somebody told me to tkae off the valve cover and check and see if there is coolant in the valve covers that the head is bad is that true?

Are you positive you have coolant not water coming out your exhaust?
If so pull and inspect your plugs for signs of coolant. Pressure test your coolant system, look for pressure drop. Inspect for obvious leaks first if pressure drop is noted. Crank over the motor with plugs out and see if coolant comes out of problem cylinder(s) if there is one.
A cylinder leak down test is another way of looking for a bad head gasket, but not too many people have a leak down tester in their garage. Procedure is similar, Pressurize the cylinder observe pressure drop, if there is check for pressure in coolant sytem or bubbles in radiator.

If it is burning coolant you will see white smoke in the exhaust. If you are just seeing water that is normal. For every gallon of gas you burn you produce nearly a gallon of water in the exhaust. Seeing water in the exhaust is ok.

What Vile said, ther will be a sweet smell to the exhaust as well in most cases.

In his original post he said he was "losing coolant". So is your coolant level actually dropping?

He needs to pressure test the cooling system to find the source of his leak.
