After having this truck for over a year, I decided to get the rust fixed behind the rear wheel wells. As these things go, it snowballed into a complete repaint. The body is exceptionally straight and the only rust was the behind the wheel wells and the cab corners were *just* beginning to bubble a tiny bit. I went by today to see where it's at, and he intends to finish the bodywork on Sunday and hopefully begin paint on Monday. Bed will be coming back off to be sprayed with either bedliner or undercoat underneath. The paint will most likely be Dupont ChromaPremiere in the original Cardinal Red color topped with 4 or so coats of clear. I'll try to get by during the week for update pics.

Looking good! Wish mine was that ready for paint!
-
A '79 with what appears to be factory rockers? I envy folks that live out of the snow belt, or find trucks to buy out of the belt. That truck is sweet, reminds me of my old '78 before it saw the salty roads many moons ago.
-
The rocker have been replaced at one point. Before we took the doors out, you can see where the rocker lines don't match up exactly like they ought to. They're not at all bad, but just off enough that a sharp eye can pick it up. When I get done with this truck, around the first of the year my 79 Short Bed will go under the knife for a restore. I have accumulated about 90% of the parts (the vast majority which is GM NOS stuff) for that. I still need to buy about another $1000 worth of parts to have that project ready to go (front and rear bumpers, GM door panels, and a few other odds and ends). I went by the shop today to see where it's at, and it looks as though it'll be this weekend before he starts squirting paint on it.
-
I see you replaced the bottom rear 1/4's behind the tires eh? I want to do that with mine as well. So did you just cut straight through them to get the old ones off? Isn't there some double-wall metal there or something like that? I recall there being some kind of double wall there since that's what traps the dirt and water between them, causing the rust to start behind the tires. Got any pics of the pieces that were cut off from behind or what the truck looked like after the stockers were cut off?
-
Sorry, no pics of the cutoff work. I hired this job out to a guy I've known 20+ years. The rust took out the inner pieces too, so he made new ones using a stepper. Looking at it now looks like it was factory new. His helper's back went out, so he's been working solo for about the last 2 weeks, trying to finish up the other existing stuff first to clear out space for mine again. It's not my DD, so I don't have to have the truck back ASAP, which is why it went on the back burner. I'll be dropping by on Saturday for a progress report and will snap pics as needed.
-
Small update: The doors, fenders, and hood are painted. Found a rust spot on the cowl that had to be fixed and tomorrow the cab will be shot. Will get the cab/front clip reassembled during the week. The bed/tailgate should be done by the weekend and I hope to have it back next week. I'll be helping with the reassemble phase towards the weekend and will get some pics. Progress has been slow because he's still flying solo trying to handle my truck amongst other work that's been scheduled.
-
Looking good! That's what I'm nervous about, I got some bad rot on the rear wheel arch. It looks easy enough, cut out the rot, weld in the new patch panel, blend in. I'm betting it's much more involved than that, since the rust may actually be more than I think, hiding behind the surrounding painted area. I don't want to cut out what I think is bad, and then end up having to replace an entire bedside. Your 79 looks to be in way better shape than my 87!
-
Went by the shop today to move a replacement bed for my other truck and check on progress. Not much got done during the week, thanks to the annual fire inspection and the 3 days of making sure everything's kosher. However, he got the bed back off and fixed the cowl rust. He was blocking/priming/skim coating a few baby dings in the cab roof once we got the bed moved. He was going to prime late tonight/early tomorrow, and hopefully shoot the cab either Sunday evening or first thing Monday. So, I went home and dyed my new door panels and have them ready to go. I plan to go down next Saturday and put the interior back together. By the way, the cab corners and bed panel patches are courtesy of Chris's operation here. I'm getting antsy to get it back...

9/27 Update:
Went by today to dye kick panels and console. Also Helped hang driver's fender and piddled around with a few other things. Will be going back tomorrow to drop off a couple of needed pieces and assemble a few other things. Cab is shot, now it only needs wet sanded/buffed. He didn't like the slight color difference between new paint and interior paint color, so he'll pull the doors back off tomorrow and shoot the inside of those too. After that, bed will be bedlined underneath and painted this week. Hopefully a week from today, I'll have it roadworthy.

Dang. That looks good!

Pics should be back up tomorrow. Installed sound deadener in doors, door weatherstrip, wired up rear speakers, and piddled around with other odds and ends today.

10/12 Update:
After the snitch of a neighbor jammed my guy up with the city over code, there was a week downtime making everyone happy. >:( So with that out of the way, he returned to work on the truck. Doors were painted on the inside, so now they're nice and shiny too. I reinstalled seats and carpet, back window, undercoated floor pans and rockers, backside of the rear bumper, made up new hardline for the fuel pump, and dyed the kick panels and console. IMO, SEM's Palomino is the closest match I've found for the buckskin/saddle color interior. Anywho, the doors will be rehung and built on Tuesday complete with new weatherstrip/channel/felts. Bed will be shot in the morning, and should be ready to wetsand/buff towards end of week. We're planning to button things up complete by Saturday as long as the neighbor doesn't cause him any more problems/delays. (There must have been crud on the camera lense, because there's no blotches on those seats.)

where did you get your carpet from? i like how you did behind the seat...did you just glue it to the back of the cab?
looks great
-
The carpet is ACC (sold here I believe). I had the interior shop redo the seats and install carpet for me originally. After this truck turned into a major project, we had to pull the carpet out to weld up cab corners (didn't want that new carpet catching fire). The back panel piece was done by ordering an extra yard and he ran some nice piping around the edges. There's about a dozen stainless steel screws/washers (looks really trick) that go around the cab seam at the top that secures the carpet (also just like the factory did it). This is a factory bucket seat truck, and the original carpet was done the same way.

10/19 Update:
Well, it's 95% done. Saturday, he shot the bed's underside with bedliner, while I built the doors. All new rubber, new LH window regulator, blasted the inside of doors with 3m self healing wax, greased window tracks, and hung the door panels. Today, I helped hang the tailgate, rear bumper and hitch, got my vent visors on, and did a little detail work. Only thing left to do is a final buff/polish, detail the interior, hang the rest of the body moulding and trim, and blast some color matching bedliner into the bed. Should be all done on Tuesday. :D

NICE!
-
Well, it's finally done. Got the last of the mouldings on today, and he did a final polish this afternoon. Only thing now is to fix a weeping rear main seal and this thing is ready to hit the road. The only thing I did on this project I dislike are the running boards. However, because of the gravel roads I drive to and from my hunting and ATV riding spots they are a necessary evil, otherwise those rockers get blasted by gravel really bad. You'll have to excuse my photography skills and equipment (ancient camera) because, these pics don't really capture the shine of that finish.

that turned out great! thats awesome you use it as a truck... im digging the sunroof too

Looks beautiful! I'd consider ditching the running boards though...
-
Man you got a right to be proud! It looks fantastic! Great job!
-
wow!! That looks great! A+ job.
-
Looks awesome man! Great job! i agree with the running boards...i used to have ones just like that and took em off. since you dont like them but think you need them maybe you should go full length with them. i think it might look better, just my .02.
-
Thanks for the compliments. I learned with my other 79 that without any rocker protection, the paint gets shredded in a hurry on those gravel roads. I don't think clear bra or chip guard will hold up to that beating, hence the running boards. If there was some way of getting around it, I would ditch them.
-
Great looking truck! Nice work.
-
Nice looking, Awesome ;)
-
Nice!. I bet you are glad it is "done"...

looks great!

That looks sweet! Great job on the repaint. ;D
-
That's NICE!

Thought I'd post a few pics of my LB at the end of the resto project. I will probably Clearbra the face of the hood for obvious reasons, but other than that it's done. Going to start on my Shortbed next in a couple of months after the wallet recovers. Specs: 350/SM465/NP205, factory buckets, factory tach, painted in the original Cardinal Red color.

Nice truck!
-
Man that is beautiful
I second that.
-
Gorgeous! I would ditch the running boards though. I think it looks better without plus they make em rot out quick. Post more pix! Did you paint the inside of the bed?
-
Thats an awesome truck. Tha camper shell fitment is amazing, and is the best one I have ever seen on these trucks. Who made it?
-
absolutely beautiful...
-
That is a beautiful truck. I wish my '79 was that sharp.
-
Man that's pretty! :)
-
Looks great Prong!
-
I'll have the truck out Tuesday for a run and will try to snap a few more pics.
Vile,
The bed's inside was shot with colormatched bedliner. The complete underside of the bed, bedsides, and the bottom of the front inner fenders were shot with the same bedliner only in black, which makes for a nice contrast to the red.
Choptop,
I bought the shell used from a guy on Craigslist. He didn't remember what brand it was in particular. However, I have a friend and his father that also have these vintage trucks with shells that they got from either ARE or Mpulse and they look and fit strikingly similar to mine.
-
Very nice! Love the color :)
-
Very sharp! Nice work
-
WOW! Very nice job...One to be VERY proud of! Lorne

Thats a pretty truck. Good job.

That truck is amazing. Can't wait to see more pictures.

Great looking truck 8)

Man, that is a beautiful resto. I love it that you returned it to its original look. Wow. I hope mine looks half as good as that when I'm done with it.
-
nice

After putting in 226 hours of my own time, along with 3 years of parts chasing and large amounts of money exchanges for the paint and bodywork, I finally got my 79 K10 resto complete (except for some engine bay detailing, and a final undercarriage washing to remove dust and crud off of the powdercoated frame). I stuck with the original colors: Dark Carmine Red/Neutral. Sikkens base with Dupont Clearcoat (8 coats). I'm quite pleased how it turned out and once I get the last little bit of cleanup done, I'll be ecstatic.

Thanks. It's too bad my poor photography skills can't capture how well it looks in person.
-
by the pictures i would think the date was 1979 and you just bought the truck off the floor nice job
-
Very nice.
-
15 months? It would take me 2 or 3 years to go through everything and achieve what you have. Very impressive!
-
Sweet. That looks great!
Very impressive, to say the least.
-
Dude you wanna build me one too, Ill take an exact match! haha
Great job man
-
Very nice truck!
-
Absolutely gorgeous truck. Congrats on your resto.
-
That color combo looks great. You set the bar pretty high for the rest of us.
-
That, young man, is an extremely clean looking truck. 10/10 ;)
-
Truly beautiful, you should be proud!
-
Thank you for posting that! I have searched all over the net for a restoration with that color combo. My '77 is exactly the same and I plan to do the same. I thought they were more popular but very hard to find one that looks that good. Are you pleased with the "tan" color? I admit I was skeptical about it but I do like yours. Thanks again. Shes gorgeous
-
Beautiful truck!
-
Yep sure is a pretty truck.
Like the color combo also. However I'm a tad bias.
What suspension/lift you got and tire size? Thanks

I'm generally not a fan of brown colors, but I do like the tan (Neutral is the official name) in this scenario. This is the original color combo from the factory, and that's what I wanted to stay with. As far as the lift question, it's a stock height suspension with 32" tires.
-
She sure is purty. I hope to have my 74 that clean soon!
-
hey nice job, hard work always pays off 8)
-
Very Nice.
