Title: Dummy security camera's. anyone use them?
Post by: dumbucket1 on August 26, 2008, 03:27:37 pm
We have had some bad apples move into the neighborhood. Already had a cd player stolen out of the garage a few weeks ago when my wife mistakingly left the garage door open on her way to work.

I ordered a set of fake dummy camera's that detect motion and sweep from side to side with a blinking light (under $20 for both on amazon.com).

I hope this may be a good deterrent once installed. (we can't afford the real deal). Anyone use them?

I have a buddy that is setting up some cameras and they can have events attached to them that will actually email the image to you if something moves in front of the camera.  Once he has it all working, I will probably see about getting some.

Set out some bait--keep the garage door open again with something that will look enticing.  Set up your camcorder in the nearby bushes.  Sit in a car nearby and observe.  See where they go if they do indeed go back to the neighbor's house.

Then Call the cops. BUSTED!

I don't know I may be tempted to confront them first which never turns out good  :D

Can you post a link to some info on that?  Our back alley is going down hill.  Been finding purse remnants (leftover from a theft?) and quit a bit of foot traffic.  I am thinking multi-unit bird house on the end of my fence with a camera in the last unit.

Close the door after they've gone in and pour chicken poo over them! Then call the nice police person.

I got 3cameras (2colour & 1b/w) that run 24hrs. I can watch all from my house and its recorded  ;)

I have an old X10 setup that I may play with, but it doesn't record.

This is what he is working on:

I used to work at/manage a 24 hour Gym that had fake cameras. The problem was, they looked fake. Everyone pretty much just decided that they were fake and did whatever they wanted. It was a real pain in my... neck. Equipment was stolen, steroids were used on the premesis, stuff was trashed and broken. So my only advice is, make sure they look freakin' real. You need to have zero doubt that they could be real, cause if people even think for one second that they are not, then they will behave however hey please. Just my experience.

Makes me mad just thinking about it... >:(

My sister works at an alarm company. I was looking into the cheap cameras when I lived around the corner from my ex. Her boss said don't waste your money. He lent me a color /  night vision camera that I hooked up to my DVD burner. Thing worked great. I could read number plates on cars when they drove in and out. The price for the camera he lent me was around $400.

Yeah i bet if you get a good quality camera and they do anything, they will get busted for sure cause you will get their plates/see their face. On some of the crappy ones their face is like a blur, and plates are hard to read cause the letters are so small from that distance.
