what do you guys think about the summit brand mufflers? how do they sound in regards to flowmasters or magnaflow??
-
I put a pair of the (2 1/4") fully welded ones on my beater truck. Pretty much stock 350, with cast iron manifolds... They sound odd to me, a little rumble at idle, as you give it the gas (especially going up hills) it makes this resonant, gargleling sound in the mufflers, it has tailpipes turning out behind the wheel, so really I wouldn't have expected this echoing noise. Maybe on another engine or bigger ones are different, but would not be my pick. Lorne

i have a set on my truck in 3 inch.
do sound a bit different.
heres the link to my clip.

try it again. or right click save as.
-
yea they do sound a little different but they dont sound bad at all.
-
I have a pair of the 2 1/4" on my truck
a bit too loud for my taste
even with an 'H' pipe
They did have an odd sound as others have noted
That went away with the 'H' pipe
They are well built
and won't expand or split
-
I know you didn't ask about other mufflers, but I installed a Thrush welded(chambered) muffler on our dually and it sounds exactly like a flowmaster. It's around the same price as the summit welded mufflers and looks similar too.
-
try looking the x pipe kit that Chris sells on this site. Can't beat the price unless you cut and bend pipe yourself.
-
You would be better off getting a system from Summit, it is a dynomax setup, and they are cheaper.
As CCZ144A said, we have x-pipe kits, but they are for long tube headers. They will work with manifolds, but you have to have downpipes made.

Is 2.5" the size you recommend? I see it is the size you sell but a lot of guys that like to go 3" but i never knew if that was the right size for a street truck that wont be making crazy power... would there be anything to gain from using 3" over 2.5"?

For an L05/350, 2.5" True-Dual would be perfect for a Stock to Mildly Built Engine, anything bigger would be "Over Kill" and a Waste of money(You probably would see a Performance decress, since your engine would be struggling to exhale that much)... The Only time I have ever seen a 3" system benefical to a Stock to Mildly Built Engine, was when it was a Single Exhaust System(Entire Setup from the headers/manifolds to the muffler and out), or Even a Single to Dual Outlets(From the Headers/Manifolds, to the Muffler, and Split Out).. Those systems were usually put on 88-98 C/K trucks, and the Third & Early Fourth GEN F-bodies....

Personally for any streetable 350 2.5 is going to be fine. For a 454, 2.5 should be fine also.
-
Hmm, how much HP/Torque would you say is ok to use with a 2.5" setup? I mean, what's the max before you would go with 3"? I ask because i do have some other mods in mind and i would not want to restrict the engine to much.
-
Any Big Block I ever built needed 3" exhaust to breath. If you are going over 450HP 3" will be a good idea
-
I did say "streetable" = mildly warmed over.

Is this in response to my post?
I was stating any bigblock I ever built needed 3" exhaust. I wasn't saying 2.5" is inadeqaute if that's how you read it. My suggestion was anything over 450HP I would run 3"
-
That was my attempt at ribbing you, basically saying yours live on just this side of streetable...
I am in agreeance with you.
-
Thanks, from this i can surmise that 2.5" is all i will need. I don't plan on going hog wild with the power due to today's gas prices. I would, but i like to actually be get to drive my truck lol. Chris, do you have any idea of the typical shipping charges on the x pipe that you sell? If it helps, my zip is 76031. Also, i had another question. Is it ok to post up and talk about products that are not sold by this site? I saw this post
"oh ok thanks. i think im going to go with the turbo true dual kit from the (The next person that post this gets BANNED!-admin) magazine. its a good price and i have heard good things about them."
-
Is is about $65 to ship it.
You can talk about any manufacturer you want ie Dynomax, flowmaster, etc. I will reply to your PM about the above. Where did you find that post?
-
Where did you find that post?
It's post number eight in this thread. Also, maybe i just did not see where you wrote it but what kind of mufflers is it that comes on that X-pipe? Or does it come with any?
-
The base kit doesn't come with mufflers, the ones that do come with it are made by the same company, Pypes Exhaust, they are $50 extra for any version you chose
This is the page in the catalog for it:

Capt, if you were to choose a pair of headers that were most compatible with the system you sell, what would those be?
-
Full length or shorties?
-
what would be the best overall. sound and power, full length or shorties?
-
Whichever ones mate up best to the system you sell and the downtubes. It kinda looks like the system was prototyped more for shorties than for full-length headers?
-
They were pro-typed for generic long tubes and a long bed truck (you cut it to fit a SWB).
If I was lowered with a SBC, I might try some 67-81 Camaro Headman Elite 1 5/8" headers.
-
Sweet, I'll be sure to remember that.
