Title: VIN Plates and paint

What did you guys do with the vin plate on the door jamb of the drivers door and the Tire info sticker on the door itself when you painted your truck?  I'm thinking just mask them off.  What do you think, drill out the rivets on the plate and peel off the door sticker? I'd like to not lose the sticker, but I can re-rivet the plate back on once I find the right size rivets.

The doors on mine are from a donor vehicle - I don't have any stickers on them anymore.  I removed them.

If I wanted to save a sticker while painting, I just taped over them, then painted.

Good luck finding original style rivets. For obvious reasons, they are not legaly marketed. Many bodyshops just pop in regular rivets when that area is repaired with no problems. But if you can, just tape it off and paint, it will eliminate any questions in the future.

thats a good point ccz145a.  I did notice the rivets look kinda flower shaped rather than round...  I'll just mask em off.

I would mask them off. If you need to take them off just use regular rivets to replace. Or I have used a very small file to cut the heads of the rivets to look like the originals. thats what I did when I put the vin tag from my 86 cab onto my 83 cab on my 86 frame. As far as installing new or used doors, and saving the stickers. I take an air chisel, chop out the metal of the old door, and toss it in the glove box.

They are called rosette rivets.  They are available as there are times when parts of the Truck/Car  (73-87's with the VIN in the door ) can be damaged.
There is a standard that body shops must follow for any VIN alterations, check with them on any specific procedures.  Some newer cars have to be inspected before it is removed and have to be present when it is replaced...

Thanks for the info captkaos.  At $105 for 4 rivets :o, I'll just put some tape over my plate for free. ;D
