Post by: Bitzer! on September 20, 2008, 09:54:19 am

If you want to be near the coast the East Coast is the best IMO to live. If you want perfect climate without a lot of natural disasters you can do a statistical search on Google.

hurricane free?  hmmm, i guess that exempts New Orleans.  :o

I have always said to my wife that if I could move tomorrow, or, do it all over again, I'd live in Asheville, N.C.   This is the backyard to the Great Smoky Mtn Nat'l Park and hiking, canoeing, history abound.  I went there in 2000 and love the place (see www.delbridge.net/smoky.html

Arizona and New Mexico aren't too bad, very hot days with no humidity--110 degrees there is like 85 degrees here in Virginia due to the humidity here. But, little do they know out there, the Colorado River won't supply the water to them too much longer the way they (and southern California) are used to it.

Oklahoma or Alabama aren't bad---pretty warm climate and some wide open spaces left to find.  Just thought of something, but, it isn't very warm up there, a town called Intercourse, Pennsylvania  ;D

Alabama = Tornado's, Heat, expect 90% humidity in the summer. Alabama only has 2 seasons - Summer and almost summer.
If I were to move from here it would be in the direction of Montana. The wife is from Canada so thats another option.

north dakota.  the cold keeps the and hippies out.  low crime, low cost of living, low property values.  have to deal with lots of open spaces, tornados, the winters but it makes you tough and happy.

I favor the state I live in- Tennessee. Moderate climate, great roads, good job prospects because of the auto industry , country living, and NO state income tax. Our school systems, however, need improvement. But we have the Country Music Hall of Fame and Miss Dolly Parton. :o and she has her own amusement park near the Great Smoky Mountains. The Smokies are the most visited vacation spot in the USA. Come and visit us y'all.

Well, that just about leaves out everything on the east coast and the mississippi river basin. :D

New Hampshire. The winters are cold but not unbearable. The summers are hot, and a tad humid but again its not bad to deal with. Fall is the most perfect time of year, Cool nights, warm days, and awesome foliage. There is plenty of open meadows, plus some of the most beautiful mountains in the world here. Plenty of winter and summer sports / activities to do. Plus you would still be in England, New England! Property values are a bit high, as are taxes. But pay scales are decent, plenty of high tech jobs, plus allot of other work that requires skills, and hands on knowledge. Crime rate is not to bad, out here in the stick where I live its not bad at all. Few break ins, stolen car now, and again, Once in a while a hold up but they are few and far between. As far as weather we have some flooding and a few good snow storms a year. But its more like a sporting event than a problem!

Stay away from KY!

Winters arent real bad, but the summers are unbearable at times. I know we had about two weeks this summer where it was 95-100+ and humidity of 90-98%. Then we had a cold front coem through and it dropped to 90 with 85% humidity..lol

appreciate the replies guys - might be relocating in a couple of years!

KY = Kentucky?

Yes, KY is Kentucky.
What kind of weather do you prefer?  Me I HATE cold weather.  If it never got below 55 it would be perfect, and I don't mind hot weather 100 isn't a big deal.
That eliminates a bunch of the northern selections.

Stay away from Calfornia, too many earthquakes.  Stay away from TX, OK, MO--tornado alley.  Stay away from Gulf states due to hurricanes.  Stay away from northern states--too cold.

that leaves...hmmmm, nothing. Oh but wait, there is old Virginny!  We have the world's largest bay,Chesapeake--awesome fishing and boating, we have the beach, Virginia Beach, we have colonial williamsburg, jamestown of 1607, Richmond-capital of the Confederate States of America and home of Edgar Allen Poe and where Patrick Henry gave his "give me liberty or give me death" speech. Thos. Jefferson's Monticello is in Charlottesville, James Madison's Montpelier is in Orange, va, Woodrow Wilson's Staunton, Washington's Mt. Vernon is near Alexandria.  Zachary Taylor's birth home is still where it was back then.  Benjamin Harrison's homeplace is still on the James river.  And, there is Gunston Hall, George Mason's homeplace (who wrote the Va Declaration of Rights, which became 90% of the US Bill of Rights.  Virginia also has the mountains--the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway that goes all the way to Cherokee N.C. and Great Smoky mtns, and the Skyline Drive Shenandoah Nat'l Park.  The Shenandoah Valley.  So very close to Washing DC and the smithsonian museums and library of congress.  Also home to more civil war battles than any other state like Manassas, Appomattox, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Winchester, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, etc....

So, if you are into history and not into tornados, hurricanes (usually don't bother us), or earthquakes, come to The Old Dominion State-the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ha Don't you mean the Soon to Be Island Nation of Kalifstonistan! ;D Won't doubt that it won't be too much longer, before someone finally decides to intervene where Mother Nature has been trying to do, and make it an Island of its own already!!! ::)  Ofcourse if that was the case, better hurry Bitzer, and get your Oceanfront Property in Scotsdale, before it's housing market sky rockets :D

My ideal would me at least 60degs everyday! I too hate the cold, i'm built for speed not comfort  :D so have no natural insulation.  I prefer the laid back approach to life where you know your neighbours, leave your back door unlocked (!) and lifes just eases by. I hate city life- its too busy.

All I'm looking for is a nice detached house in nice surroundings and good schooling for my lil girl!

Maybe Virginia is they way to go, SgtDel paints a lovely picture and of course I'll have faith in the local constabulary   ;D

Virginia is a very nice state.  I work in Northern Virginia for a local Government.  I LOVE the Williamsburg area but they can get snow every now and then.  I was in Williamsburg 5 years ago in January for my anniversary and got 6 inches of snow.  Doesn't happen alot, but it does, non the less.

It was beautiful, by the way.

I lived in Northern Va for only the four years I needed to to get my degree from Mason, that place was so busy and urban and expensive, and crowded, and traffic jammed that I headed back to Richmond afterwards.  Fairfax is nice and convenient, but, I am more layed back than for that lifestyle. I loved being only minutes from the nation's capital and smithsonian institute and library of congress, but, I can always drive two hours up I95 to see those.

Now I think of my parents' river house when I read this.  Everyone knows everyone and watches each other's property and drives around in golf carts.  I drove my sheriff's car there one day and parked in front of the house when I had to go to a neighboring county to pick up an extradition--I parked at the house to see what was in the fridge, when I walked back to the front door, I couldn't believe all the neighbors standing in the driveway wondering why a sheriff was at the house. When they saw it was me, it clicked in their minds.

Now, Andy, as far as it never getting below 60 degrees, I think you are out of luck. You can buy coats and sweaters at WalMart--and there are Walmarts EVERYWHERE.  Or, for warmth, you can always go to Mexico or Brazil or Cuba--but I'd triple lock all doors. Any other place and you are dealing with a lot of humidity.  As mentioned before, Arizona and New Mexico may seldomly see temps below that (well, except for at night when it can get cold in the desert) but, the water supply will not last forever there.  Texas is kind of dry and will see warmer temps, but, ask Houstonians about hurricanes.

We haven't received a good snow here in Richmond in years.  Each winter, we may get perhaps two storms that will leave merely an inch or two.  Once in a while we will get a foot of snow, but, that like once in ten years or so. It makes things fun and interesting.  An hour west of here in the mountians, they get their share of the white stuff.   I beleive it got below 30 degrees only two or three time here last winter.

As I type this I am on vacation on the outer banks of N.C. , looking at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse through the window of the house we rented, five miles distant, and the waves crashing onto the shore, three lots away.  Went to Ocracoke Island yesterday--very nice, but we are in the middle of a wind storm right now. Going to Manteo on Roanoke island today--maybe I'll see Andy Griffith there, going by his house in a bit.  Ocracoke---now there's a place for you Andy--everyone knows everyone, small community, can keep the doors unlocked--this is where Blackbeard (Edward Teach) was killed by Robert Maynard in the 1700's--its claim to fame.  I went by the inlet yesterday where his ship was trapped in by maynard and fought to the death.  However, Ocracoke definatley sees its share of hurricanes.  www.nps.gov/caha
