I have a 79 chevy stepeside that I am working on. I found a guage cluster out of a 76 or 77 1 ton that had a factory tach and a small gas guage. I cannot get the tach to work. I have several tachometers and I cant get any of them to work. I am using am using a stock HEI.
I have the factory tach wiring harness and it has some kind of condesor that plugs in to the wires that goes from the tach to the guage, but the wires are broke off on side of it so i didn't us it. Has anyone else installed a factory tach in their truck and ran in to any problems?
Thanks in advance,
Joe

Well most of the factory tachs were garbage and broke so yours probably doesn't work anyway.

Not really sure what you are saying is broken but if the gauge has broken parts that go to the tach I wouldn't count on it ever working.
-
If you flip the cluster over the leads for the tach are clearly marked on it.
A 76-77 cluster is not the same as a 78-80 cluster. The 76-77 version has a mechanical oil gauge on it.
FYI- I have probably swapped about 10 of these out.

I saw an aftermarket kit that appears to have a factory style tachometer and gauges that will fit in the regular housing;has anyone installed one ......
-
Where? If it is Covan's Avoid it, they are surface mount and they lack structural support.
-
ebay item 150302609159 ...company appears to be called gm sports......
-
Looks like someone modified factory gauges. Never heard of them.
-
^ That's an interesting product. From what I understand of reading the auction, the gauges are new and they put the faces and needles on to match the year that your truck is. And, they wire the tach independently (like any universal tach) so that anybody can wire it in regardless of your year or cluster. It looks like they take the factory printed circuit board right out of the equation.
-
Tachs don't use the printed circuit, the have a lead that comes straight off to power/coil/ground.
-
Sorry to bring this up again, I remember seeing the auction when it was current. I googled gm sports with no luck. Anyone happen to have a link?

Looks like a nice tach/gas gauge and would fit right in with the stock gauges but its a little pricey.
Did you notice it said "Chevy and GMS trucks", I have never heard of a GMS truck.
-
Maybe a little pricey but if you are looking to go with the stock look and want to keep your quartz clock it is something to break the piggy bank for...

I am anxiously awaiting for Dakotas VHX system to come out.

Me 3

Can someone elaborate more on what the Dakota VHX sysytem is?
-
Analog setup instead of digital that bolts in place of the factory setup.
-
That is a nice set, perfect with indicator lights, you could have both if you choose.
-
Those are just the separate ones. The ones for the trucks will all be in a cluster like the digital set.
-
Ok, now I am excited to see what these are going to look like. Is there an estimated time when these will be available?
-
They said it would be this year, it will be AFTER March though...
-
Capt, where are those gauges from? They are GORGEOUS. I want them. I would do terrible things to have them.
-
Those that I posted are Dakota's new Seperate VHX series. I can get them if you want them.
-
I do want them, How much are they? Ill see if I have funds. Are those the only two or do they have all of them for our dash?
-
Actually, I just realized they have the volts, oil, temp, and fuel. Haha. So a custom dash would be kind of necessary. How much are they?
-
Dakota Digital should have the bolt in replacement in analog availible in June for these truck like the digital version they currently make.
Do you want me to give you a price on those pictured.
-
Do you have both prices?
-
both? As in on the VHX kit AND the seperate gauges? No. The kit isn't out and there is not pricing on them. I can get you a price on the seperate gauges though.
-
Chris, could you PM me the pricing on those gauges?
-
The separate ones? Either dual round or triple rounds are $700 + shipping.
-
I just posted the information and pictures on the 73-87(91) VHX Analog gauge sets.
