Title: Where are all the '80s?
Post by: farmallgray on October 26, 2008, 08:28:12 pm
I don't see very many pics of 1980 trucks with square headlights on here. Are they that rare, or does everybody hate them and swap them for other front clips? I swapped my 79 K-20 to an 80 front end about 8 yrs ago and I really like it. Please post pics if you have any.

Thats not my truck but i think your talking about this style.I personally dont like the square headlights, i got a 80 myself and it came factory with the round headlights but to each his own i guess. I dont think its a matter of RARE i think its just a matter of taste on the 80 trucks with the square versus the round headlights.

thanks

You changed an entire 79 front clip to give you the 80 look??? Wow that is some dedication to the look!  Personally I like the '73-79's cause of the round lights, but I have seen some good looking 80's since joining the forums, that have swayed me in my decision....  Yeah I do like the 81-91 look, but they are more than over popular in my neck of the woods(plus they seem to be more likely to get stolen by a punk).....

Oh and another reason why I didn't care for them, was the square lights made the front look like a Furd of the same era :-\

My 1980 had the orund headlights. I do not like the 1980 square headlight because it looks like the Dodge pickups. I'm not really sure why GM did that but a guy up the street here has one.

The 80's are definitely not rare, they just aren't very popular or not enough people with them have joined.  I kinda like them as they are different.

I have an 81 with the 4 lights, but found a complete (and I mean complete) 89 burb front clip for $250, so that is going on mine.

I didn't have to change the whole clip. Just the gravel pan (may not have had to but it got bent in the wreck), headlight bezels, and parking lights. Had to drill a couple new holes in the core support, and add the headlight bucket brackets. Fenders, hood, grille are the same.

I too think it is a unique look that you don't see as often as the other styles. I always liked to be a little different anyway.

Odd that you posted this on the day I towed a 1980 square-light 3/4-ton parts truck home.  It's going to the scrap heap Friday, and I robbed the fenders, doors, tranny/t-case, and axles from it but left the lights and grill behind as my initial thoughts are "ICK" when I compared it to my 1979 round-light.  As everyone said, to each their own....

I bought my 1980 with only the rotted cab and frame.  I don't like the 80 headlight arangement at all and ordered all my parts for a 76.  They seem rare around here just because they were only made for one year I guess.  This is how my 80 looks now.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RtoDANapUg

This is my 1980.  I like the round lights.  Last year they made them.

I'm lost now.  Every 80 I have seen has the square oddball headlights.  Did they run a couple without them?  ???

I think that in 1980, both Chev and GMC offered both round lights and square lights....
I think it depended on the model.  Maybe someone on the site can give some detail.

In 1980, the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra Classic, both top-of-the-line trim levels for Chevy and GMC, came with the rectangular headlamps.  All other trim levels that year for both Chevy and GMC had round headlamps.  I assume it was done as a transition to the new '81 - 87 front end.

My 1980 Custom Deluxe has the round headlights.  I changed the headlamp bezels to the 1973-1978 style -- just a matter of personal taste.

I don't like hod the hood doesn't match up with the headlight buckets (they stick out)  other than that it's kinda take it or leave it.

From what I understand (from an '80 sales brochure), the silverado and sport (and GMC versions) came standard with the square headlights, while it was optional on the lower trim levels. I think they called it the front end decor package or somthing like that.

The offered the same thing on the newer body style. My 88 c1500 is cheyenne trim level but had the quad headlights and chrome grille.

Square was standard on top of the line models, optional on all other models.

Alot of Truck and car manufacturers will allow the previous designs to lag a little longer, as it helps to keep the loyal customers happy, till the bodystyle transition is do
Complete( most regular customers won't buy a new design, till that design is at least on its second or third year of it)......

BTW, the square headlight option started at the end of the 1979 run on YE9 trim.

Lots of info on this subject.  I am biased, but I think Chev/GMC really lost a lot of the "classic" look when they went from round to square headlights.  Round headlights really rare here in eastern Canada.  People always ask..how "old" is that thing anyway?  I'm proud that it's my daily driver.
