I tell her for every cow she saves, I eat two

You know that really gets me.  People are vegetarians because they don't want animals to die.  Well, HELLO!, they would never have been born had they not made a delicious meal.

How many cows would there be if we didn't like steaks and hamburgers?  I mean, what good are they ever since we invented tractors to pull our plows (yes, i know oxen and cows are not the same)?  OK, some Holsteins produce milk, but, most would not have been born to be killed later.

Im just glad that in KY things are so much more simple! Our trucks smoke, we are proud to eat meat, and we love our guns.  The worst part of this state, there are cousins that get married but that is in the mountains back east! ;D

This thread goes from sniffing exhausts to sniffing Glocks. The smoke you see is a result of the powder and grain used--I assume.  'Taint me shooting.  I saw that Gif somewhere and saved it.  Some ammo shoot cleaner than others. When we are at our shooting range, we really don't see too much smoke--it is the flying shells you must dodge, especially when 20 people are on the line.  Button up that top collar so you wont have burn marks on your chest!  I dont know what Glock that is, but neither my Glock 20 or Glock 17 does that either.

As for the '72 Kenworth, man I love those classics--what's aerodynamics?  I watched Convoy just last night with Kris Kristopherson.  There were some old rigs in that old flick of the 70's. How 'boutya Rubber Duck?

If any of you non-Californians are ever looking for a real nice deal on used trucks, Southern CA (the mostly desert areas) is the area to search.  If they have moderate mileage and are close to failing the sniffer test, you can pick them up quite inexpensively.  Being from the desert, they have no rust either.

CONVOY?! Dang Sarge, you sound like a good ol' boy now... onlyest thing is, I'm quite a bit older an you so I figure that makes me a gooder ol' boy... BTW, Model 21= 45 ACP. (2) 13 rnd mags. Light, sweet big-power piece w/Factory Trijicon sights. But if you're going to shoot any of that 230gr surplus ball ammo, after about a box of 50 your wrist is starting to pain you pretty good... prolly time to sit down and have a cold beer anyway... another 'range story'... how about laying prone on the high-power range next to a guy sighting-in his Weatherby .338 when one of his shells ejects right down the back of my tucked-in shirt collar? Man-- I must have looked like a young cat that just jumped up onto a hot griddle!

Ok, enough of that stuff. I'm feelin' kind of bad now because we've high-jacked this thread somethin' terrible... but you did make a darn good point Sarge; anybody looking for old GM trucks, cars or whatever, should checkout the Southwest here because from what I've seen and passed on--- stuff here is hands down--- A WHOLE lot better shape then same from wet n snowy Back East... back there, I wouldn't give guys' $100 bucks for some of the rusty old stuff I've seen on eBay....ooops! Did it again!

Ok, for our original poster- 87r10shorty- my advice to you is that unless you're willing to do a bunch of work on this truck AND do it yourself AND you have the money to throw at it, AND you have the time to put into it, in other words A PROJECT-- consider taking the 1000 bucks from The State (when that program comes back online of course) and find yourself an older PRE-76 truck for sale from some old farmer's fruit-stand out there in Desert Hot Springs... you can probably get a darn good deal. Add to that, no smog hassles, no restrictions as to what you can put in it as far as engine/trans, whatever... seriously consider my advice here because I have been working on an old '86 GMC 1-TON for almost a year now, just to get the darn thing smog legal.... trust me; it's a LOT of work. Only reason I'm doing this project is because it's going to be my one-heck of a tow vehicle for boats, racecars, etc.... that's my goal, consider yours'?

Another strategy may be to form a "shelf company or corporation."  This is a company in name only.  The company is based in another state---without stringent emmissions policies.  You can then register the car/truck under the company.

Problem solved for probably less$$$.

I just went through this process having moved to the LA area from Oregon.  I was just as frustrated with the SMOG requirements coming from Oregon.  I found out several things through the process.  (1)Every SMOG Test Only station will give you different stories and explanations.  Those shops are under the microscope from the state because they are high volume testers.  The state is always trying to find ways to fine them so the state can make some money.  (2)Find the highest certified SMOG shop you can find close to you, probably a Gold Shield station.  They receive the least attention from the state because they pay a license fee to the state to be able to display that Gold Shield, but the shop also has to meet specific requirements from the state.  (3)What I learned is that as long as it passes the emissions test and passes the visual inspection, (they don't test the operation of the components) you get your SMOG cert.  (4)You can take your vehicle to some places and, if they are not busy, ask them to do a test in training mode.  That way the results don't get sent in to the state, but you can see where you stand.  Some may do it for free, others may charge you a small fee.  Just call around first and let them know what your situation is.  (5)Make sure they use their reference book and not the emissions sticker on the engine compartment.  They look for that sticker.  If you are missing a component that is listed on that sticker, you fail.  I got rid of that sticker, fast!!
After learning all this I was fortunate to learn that since the vehicle was bought outside of California and I brought it into the state, I was able go get it SMOGed under the Federal Emissions Standards, not California.  I have a 1977 C20 truck so I was one year off from not having to do the SMOG stuff at all.  But I learned a lot through this process.  Hope this helps...

Switch the VIN #s to a pre 75.  ::)
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I live in bruce county ontaro and we have no smog checks here you can drive around with headers and no cat and no one cares. but watch out if you leave bruce county or they will geta. think its one of the last places like this in ontario. o and you only have to get a saftey when you go to register a vechical in your name. once its registered never have to bring it into a saftey or get it looked over by a mechanic. you c some pretty big rust buckets here in bruce county lol

In England you only legally have to have a catalytic converter if your vehicle was made after '91... :-)

-- consider taking the 1000 bucks from The State (when that program comes back online of course) and
$1000 for an 87 Shortbed????......Id buy it in a second, otherwise, tell the State to go plsy in the highway. I wouldnt let those dirtbags near my truck. They'll buy it from you, ship it to another state, and auction it off for alot more, then that person ( most likely a dealer) will sell it and make a fortune. Take it to a shop and have them diagnose what the problem is. It is worht fising, because anew truck to replace it is abot $20k and wont be as valuable.
