« on: April 05, 2010, 09:20:03 pm »
hey every one' just joined the site, i'm from the great white north ( ottawa canada ) i've been looking for a site to help with my newest project & from what i've been seeing this is da place to be
a little history i'v been a mopar man for a long time just spent two year's dusting off a a #s matching 73 340 duster that the pre owner had built for drag strip all the best part's at that time lift it in storage and dissapered till my son bought it from the old man ( barn find!!!)
so i know a little about car's except the deep part's of engin building, we go to look at a project for me another duster , it's junk but beside it was a 85 gmc stepside the guy start's it up no smoke ,rattles, smooth running ( something said this is what i'm looking for)
anyway's the body  & box is apart and under way my first problem is that the mortor has been changed, none of the gauges worked changed the engin harness thinking he went from gauges to light's no luck but the connection's are diffently different got gas to work sending unit, speedo not hooked up turned cable speedo worked put in trans did not work SO! my question is how do i find out what the heck i'v got for an engin & trans and the year it is, this would help you think

papas85toy, It sounds like we have the same truck..LOL..mine came from Indiana. On the drivers side of the engine in the back against the fire wall, there is a pad and a number stamped on it. You might have to clime up in there and look down over the drivers side head to see it. Spray some cleaner back there and rub it with a rag to clean it up. Then go to www.73-87chevy.com and on that site he has all the engine codes, it will tell you what you have. On this site here in the Tech pages is a transmission pan identifier, check it out and you know which trans you have.

Rob..

what kind of engine won't matter.  It will either be a Small Block or Big Block.  Displacement won't come into play until you are ready to rebuilt it.

You can post the numbers here and we can decipher them for you.
