87 350 to a 400?
« on: April 27, 2010, 06:35:34 am »
Hey everyone,
I blew up the 350 in my 87 r1500. Now my buddy has a small block 400 that hes gonna give to me, im not quite sure of the year or anything yet cause i havent gotten the numbers. But would i be able to use the stock throttle body on that 400? or could i just get an prom made for that motor. I already have the adapter for a edelbrock intake cause thats what i had on my original 350.
Thank you,
Kyle

It will swap in if you have all the parts (What heads do you have on it, as TBI heads weren't like the 400 heads?)  I would probably get a chip for it due to more cubes to optimize its performace, but it should/will work.

ok, i thought they were different heads. i have an inake for both the TBI heads and the old style heads. and the adapter will work cause its the same intake for a 350 as a 400.
Now  i either have to rebuild the stock 350 or my buddys 400. Id rather go with the 400. I would like to make it a budget rebuild but would also like some performance.

Now i have heard that the TBI LO5 heads are not as free flowing on the exhaust side as the older heads. SO if i were to rebuild a set, which ones would i gain the most performance out of in your guys opinion? I will most likely be using the stock throttle body with an upgraded prom as opposed to a carb. I have been told that the best cam to use with a TBI is the summit 1102. Opinions?

The tbi heads are very restricted. I am putting some vortec heads on my tbi but you have to get a new intake also.

so im guessing they make an intake for that to fit a carb, then i use the adapter for the TBI. Are those vortec heads good enough stock to gain some performance? sorry for all the questions, first time doing all this.

They are an excellent upgrade in my opinion. I would go ahead and put performance springs on them in case you decide to put a bigger cam in later. You are right about the intake.
