Timing gear question
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:39:41 pm »
When I was putting my timing chain on, I saw there were three notches to install the gear on the crank. One was for more torque, one was for more horsepower and the center was, well in the middle. I set mine in the middle.Has anyone ever set the crank gear to one of these other settings and what was the results?

I know, but the the paper that came with the timing chain (Cloyles) said that if you lined your cam up with one notch it would make more torque and the other one would make more horse power. One notch had a square over it and one had a triangle over. I guess it either retards or advances your cam timing.  The reason I'm asking is that my 3/4 ton longbed with a headache rack will never be confused with a hotrod, so I figure I may as well make some torque at least. The kid in me wanted a hopped up hot rod engine, but the old man in me is winning out fast. I mean if you rarely go over 65 MPH what good is a bunch of horsepower? No one's ever tried lining up their cam on those torque or hosepower notches? I'm in the process of pulling the heads off right now so while I already have nearly everything apart, this would be a good time to make a change if it is advisable.
