Quadrajet Question
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:40:53 pm »
OK so I have a 1986 4.3 v6 auto trans, and it still has the original carb, probably 300k miles on it or so? It has been rebuilt though throughout the years. So heres the question, I have shorty headers on this engine, and maybe 14 inches of exhaust past that 2 1/2 inch if thats important. I do not drive this thing at all just around the yard to work on it. I am wondering once I put a single exhaust system on it with a turbo muffler, will the truck run better? I have replaced the distributor, plugs, wires, new battery, new a/c stuff, and everything else is fine. It'll even idle like this. It'll start usually after 1-2 cranks after sitting a few days. It just back fires every once in a while especially at startup. I think its because there is no back pressure on it? My step grandfather says its the carb....

I think I would check the timing first and make sure it's set properly.

Yes the choke is functioning 100% fine, and timing is dead on from my timing light.
