did GM not galvanize this area?

i put a new bulb in my cargo light and i can see i have some of that very light surface rust in between the inner and outer panel of my roof. is there anything i can do?

Yes, spray some por-15 with a spray gun in there.

Only galvanizing I've ever see was on the front disc brake splash shields... :)

In '89 GM started galvanizing these trucks a bit.

There is a product called Spray-Galv in a rattle can by Seymour paints.  I'll see if I can get some more info on it and post it up.

http://www.seymourpaint.com/spray_galv.html  while finding it there are many others that offer the same type of coating.

You need to prevent oxygen and moisture from penetrating the unprotected area. Once oxygen and water gets in there any sheetmetal will start to rust. Air has moisture in it so just being exposed to damp air will rust unprotected sheet metal. There are so many products on the market now, just google "stop rust"

i'm talking about the wrong thing then, what ever they coat the metal underneath the truck with, it's gray looking. it should be in there. i'll try to spray something. thanks for the replies, i know i get a little obsessed about rust on here. just trying make it last. i'm beginning to believe there is no such thing as a rust free older chevy.

Yeah, I feel your frustration regarding rust.  Although rare, there's a few rust free older Chevy trucks out there such as my Suburban that spent its life in the California desert.  On the otherhand, my other Suburban (1982) spent its life in Washington state where it rains a lot and it's rusting from the inside out.  I've tried many times to deal with it but it keeps coming back with a stronger vengence.  It's now a lost cause so eventually, the drivetrain will be taken out and put into a newer vehicle.

everything on my truck is solid except for a few palces in the windshield channel and back glass. no cab corner or rocker rust. only thing i figure is if its rusting from the inside out is because of condensation. heavy dew from overnight making it sweat on the inside of the panels.
