Air horns
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:35:48 pm »
After an almost nasty incident on the freeway today, I've decided I'm going to get some air horns on the truck.   Some idiot came up and almost sideswiped me on the on-ramp merge passing me in the dirt on the right side, and I was going at least 80 when he did it.  Almost hit my daughters door.  then he started screwing with me.  I need something that will shock ya and stun ya and I've seen horns that will do it.  I wan't em.  I've also been having problems with tractor trailers swerving left on me when I pass them.  coming from a family with lots of truck drivers, all i can say is the REAL truck drivers are far and few between nowadays.  seems like they're all local jockeys who are going on long trips for the first time.

The stockers just don't cut it.  I want the loudest one I can get that can be mounted within reason to the truck and not be mounted within plain sight.  I'm not sure yet where the compressor will go, but the horns will be under the hood somewhere and the tank will be in the under the bed where the spare tire used to be.  I'm thinking putting the compressor in the front of the bed, ahead of one of the wheel-wells.

Have any of you guys bought stuff from hornblasters.com before?  they're the one's I'm looking at right now.

This is the setup I'm looking at.  If I don't like the 2 gallon tank later I have some little 4 gallon tanks around the house I could try later, maybe.

If I have to, to get maximum volume, I'll drill holes in the core support so they can be open to the back of the grille.

If you guys have any pics of your setups, I'd appreciate a look see.  I need ideas so i don't have to cut up the truck more than necessary.

Suicide doors used to have kits. Point the horns downward so they don't get full of crap and you don't need to run baffles. you'll see alot of the guys with the 379 Pete's with em on the side of the catwalk pointed down or rearward. True train horn setups aren't really directional, and you'll probably want to keep your stock horn intact, don't want any noise violations and what not.

i have mixed emotions about them myself.  i like them, there loud, there fun, and scare the crap out of anything/anyone in your path. but in the same token, like every fad, its also very annoying. every body and there brother now run them. and over do it .  especially at truck shows. i want to poke my ear drums out. plus all jokes aside, you can proably cause an accident or worse with them.  thats the safety guy in me lol.  but ill admit, watching hornblaster videos crack me up. i laugh and laugh.  haha

We have air horns on our ambulances and I love them!!! They will defiantly get peoples attention and move them out of the way when we need them too.

The one that you linked seems like it would suit your purpose, and I think you could make it work without cutting up the truck at all. It won't be quite as effective as firing warning shots, but it should get some attention.

I firmly believe that the reason that there seems to be more stupid people operating OTR trucks recently is directly related to the fact that alot of the new trucks don't require the ability to operate a manual transmission.

I agree with the manual transmission thing.

I also agree air horns are annoying when somebody rides around blasting them all day at everything he sees.  I've just about had it, and I bet if my kid wasn't in the car I'd have hit him.  he PO'd me that badly.  I think of the way overdone horns as maybe getting me a sound violation but that beats an assault charge or worse....

I also plan to have a selector switch somewhere, and the steering wheel horn button will blow whichever horn is selected, either the stockers or the air horns.

I've been reading more into them and now see I won't have to cut up the truck at all, thanks for that lil tidbit.  Since the horns are seperate, I can mount them in different places so I can do almost anything with em.   I'm thinking put what will fit behind the bumper and what wont on the inner fenders pointed towards the gap under the radiator.

Its cause there's a driver shortage don't ya know. They took our manuals away at work, got some Allison city bus transmissions or something now, you can't even check the fluid in them. Glad I don't have to deal with many hills.

boys and their toys.

The Richmond Amtrak station is about 1 mile away from my house.  I hear the horns without problem while sitting in my house watching TV!  Those puppies are loud.  Most times i don't even think about it because i'm used to them, but, i can still hear them.  Just think about that when you put one in your truck.  People from a mile away will love  ya.

just haul a trailer around like this:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaQTNjQUi_o&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Those are great!  If I had that trailer, I'd tow it frequently...   ;D
