1986 GMC Shortbed Dually Project
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:21:55 PM »
As a 15 year old car lover, "Born and raised Chevys! Love duallys"  I already had a 1985 corvette racecar I was building. But I have always wanted an 80's shortbed chevy truck with the stacked headlights and HAD to be four wheel drive.  Well im from the north east and there are non around, the ones that were, were rusted in half.  Well after taking a usual trip to a junkyard about 50 miles away I saw my dream truck sitting in the weeds. A 1986 GMC shortbed 4 wheel drive.  As I asked the man who ran the junkyard how much it was I almost fainted when he told me $700.  I went and looked at the frame, Surface rust but not too bad, One cab corner was starting to go.  He said it ran and the rear end was out of it.  Easy fix.  As i took it home and me and my dad were starting to discuss what we were going to do with the truck we came up with a crazy idea.  My dad said where are we going to find a rear end cheap? I said I knew a few places and he said while were at it we may as well stick a dually rear end under it.  Yes i know it was a crazy idea but after looking some up online it was the coolest looking truck i ever saw.  So that is what we are going to do make an 86 shortbed GMC into a dually.  Well I proceeded to taking the bed off to find out that there was a CRACK on the frame in front of the shackle.  Welding and plating would work but not for what i wanted to do with the truck.  So after looking everywhere we found a frame for a few hundred dollars and i bought it stripped it and layed on the chassis saver. Here are a few pics of the build.
