Replaced Ignition, New Problem...sigh
« on: March 10, 2013, 03:02:16 pm »
Truck was running great still ignition got stuck in on posistion...I took out to fuses but it kept running so I unplugged battery and it finally stopped running.

Replaced ignition this morning.  Had previous post about this issue.

Went to start vehicle and it wouldnt start.  Cranks over fine, I put some gas in carb and it fires up and runs real rough and dies.

I am at a big low now as I thought I was back on the road.  Any ideas.  The truck was running great before I had to replace ignition.

Thanks yall.

What year truck ?  Does it have a mech. Or electric fuel pump ?
Since you put gas in carb. And it ran until it ran out of gas ( the ruff running is more likely due to you poring gas down the carb., unlike when the carb. injects it and is able to atomize it properly ), I would guess it is the ignition switch.  I know you do not want to hear this but, you more than likely need to check the hookup of the ignition switch as far as the electrical circuit.  Sounds like it is not allowing the electrical circuit to complete to actually start the truck.
Check to see if you are getting power to the distributor when you are cranking the truck.  No power to dist. No power to plugs.

So I put more gas in carb and it fired up and ran fine untill that gas was done and died.  So the rough running I experienced was prolly like you said.

Hmm so check to see if I have power to distributor when key is in on  posistion?  Ill do that tomorrow.

If my ignition is doing like you are saying what am I looking at?

Its a 86 chevy with 4bbl q-jet 350 motor.  As far as fuel pump I assume mech...its on the block.

At this point I am assuming you either hooked up wrong, missed something, or got something switched around.  I know that you do not want to hear that you need to take it back out and check, but at this point that is where I would start.

I have gotten pretty fast at taking off all that stuff to get to the ignition so thats not an issue to me...especially if you think I didnt hook something up right.

The only thing I think is that little plastic piece that is in the way of the torx screw fort ignition.  Its got 2 metal tabs coming off it....I had some issues with it.  Maybe that could be the issue?  I couldnt get it back in all the way and when I did I screwed the torx screw in and that plastic piece has that plastic tab in the way so I  may be screwed in place.....if that makes since.

Unplugged distr wire and tested.  Have power to dist with key off.  When I turn on key I have no power.

I'm taking ignition back out...what should I do?

Solved.  Was not getting fuel.  Old timer in neighborhood said he has had issues with filter in the q-jet.  Took it out and she started right up.  I'm going to add an in line filter soon.  Thanks for the help y'all.

Glad you got it fixed.  Weird though that right after replacing ignition you get clogged fuel filter.
