Low end response
« on: May 14, 2013, 08:54:02 pm »
i have an 85 K10, it originally came with a 305 but somewhere along the line, someone put a Jasper 350 into the truck. i have since put reman stock GM heads on it, but it is just a plain jane motor with dual cherry bombs. my question is what can i do for some more low end response. i want a little more power coming out of stop lights lol. i was thinking somewhere along the lines of headers/exhaust, replacement intake with a 4 barrel, (has holley 2 barrel now) and possibly a cam, im open to any suggestions just looking around to see what you guys would suggest. Thanks

What is your rear end gear?   I went from a 2.73 to 3.73, put a shift kit in the 700R4 and messed with the governor weights and springs..........feels like a different truck. Lights the tires, has a WOT at 5000, before it was 3500 rpm.  I have a Goodwrench 350 in it, totally stock with headers and 2 1/2 duals. No smog and Summit HEI.

there are a lot of post around here that can help you se what others have done but if you give us an idea of how far you wanna take it and how much you wanna spend then Ideas can flow. Our suggestions really boil down to how much power you want (ie..what engine manners are you willing to put up with in your truck) and money. What do you plan on doing with the truck. daily driver, off road, hauling?

But some basics that will definitely help are one, as you said upgrading the carb if you have a 2 barrel. You will have to change the intake as well in order to put a 4 barrel on it and a dual plane is the only real way to go in order to keep the low and mid range torque you need in the truck. Also headers, I recommend full length but there are still gains to be had even from mid length and shorties. Finishing the rest of the exhaust will help as well. then there are always cams, better flowing heads, higher compression pistons or turbos, supercharges, etc,...

For street use and hole shots, concentrate on torque, not horsepower.  Four-barrel carb with a dual-plane manifold, stump-puller cam, and long-tube headers would do a lot pretty cheap.
