84 K30 Won't Turn Over
« on: November 19, 2013, 08:07:05 am »
Need help diagnosing the problem.  I got an '84 K30 with dump bed and plow with the purchase of my farm.  Don't know much history on it, but I have replaced the alternator, starter, plugs, wires, coil, and ignition control module to get it running fine.  Disconnected battery to hook-up the plow wiring.  Tried to start it, and nothing happened.  Engine did not turn over.   Disconnected all plow electrical connections and returned the battery wiring back to the way it was when it was running.  No change.  When I turn the key, there seems to be a big power draw (dash board lights and buzzer dim).  The dash board lights and buzzer work fine prior to turning the key.  Jumping the battery had no effect.  Clutch safety sensor seems to be working, because when I turn the key without the clutch pushed in, it does not have the big power draw.  Battery has good charge.  Starter was bench tested and passed.  Checked battery cable going to the starter, and it is fine as well.  I am thinking it is an electrical issue like a blown fuse, but I really don't know and have limit knowledge on cars.

Try jumping the s terminal and the b terminal on the starter with 12 volts. That should get it started. Good luck may just BA fuse link

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

Does the solenoid even 'click?'  Run voltage drop tests across the positive and negative battery cables and the 12-gauge purple wire connecting the ignition switch to the "S" terminal of the solenoid.  Verify that the battery cables are making good connection to the battery posts/pads, especially if you're using stacked cables at the battery.  Make sure you have clean and tight cable/wire connections to the starter.  Verify that the solenoid "S" wire isn't shorting to ground under the dash in the vicinity of the clutch pedal arm and push-rod or where it passes around the back of the cylinder head... and that it isn't laying up against the exhaust manifold or rubbing against the starter heat shield.

confused on the order you did things, did you put all those parts on it before you even had it running in the first place? did you swap batteries? to me sounds like a bad connection, bad battery or bad starter. a bad fuse wouldnt allow any power not limit it like you are describing. how are your main grounds(bat. to front clip, bat. to alt. bat. to frame)?
