Tires for my custom dually build...
« on: April 29, 2014, 03:53:56 pm »
Hi all,

I'm building a custom truck, just for fun and cruising around. It will never be used for hauling anything beyond a mattress or couch - if ever.

The loose details of it at the moment are:
~ an early 2000ish S-10 frame, extended cab
~ a 14 bolt full float cab and chassis dually axle
~ trying to find knuckles off an 8 lug Chevy anything (going to have the spindle snout machined to fit on the stock S-10 knuckles)
~ might buy my neighbors '82 S-10 truck for the cab
~ 16X6 dually rims from an 80's Chevy I think (craigslist find for ridiculously cheap, who knows what they're from)
~ planning to either bag and step notch the rear, or run a static drop

So the ultimate question is I'm trying to find a low profile tire to throw on this. I found some 165/50R16 tires online, but the load index is only 77 and they're obviously rated for a passenger car. Then I'm confused because I'm pretty sure it's a P-Metric tire, not the American standard... and the difference between load index and load rating... and then I just get lost and confused about what everything means after that.

Is this tire unsafe for my intended purpose?

My thoughts are that it's not uncommon to put passenger tires on a minivan, which have much higher curb and gross weights than my truck will have. It's just going to be a small-ish motor, regular cab, and some type of flat bed. Should be under 4,000 pounds.

Load index of 77 is like 1,000 pounds per tire, times 6...

Otherwise, does anyone know of a low profile and narrow tire I can mount on these rims? What kind of tires have you seen on lowrider Chevy duallys?
