Help with head gasket selection!
« on: December 07, 2014, 06:46:25 pm »
So heres the deal. the motor in my 77 c10 has recently started burning coolant. not a whole lot but yes im sure its burning and not leaking. its a 350 4 bolt main with a small cam(unknown specs) and just a few bolt ons. as far as i know theres nothing else done to it that i can see and im guessing its all stock inside besides the cam.

it hasnt been overheated since ive had the motor and this is a new problem so its not like its been going on since i installed the motor in 2007.

the motor runs great so its worth it to me to pull the engine, give it some new gaskets(heads, oil pan, ect.), and give the motor a good once over from the shortblock up.

ive made a list of everything i need down to every nut and bolt except for what type of head gaskets to get. ive got it narrowed down to

and

price is of no concern to me and if you have some better suggestions please share. this will be my first SBC head gasket job but ive done just about everything else from there up. ive done alot of reading on this type of head gasket that type blah blah blah i dont need some $90 per side set.

thanks in advance you guys

The Fel Pro 1003 are what I recently used on a head swap and no problems. I also used the copper coat spray.

I used Felpro 1094, with aluminum paint on them to help them seal, plus ran some block sealant through the coolant.  Use thread sealer on the head bolt threads.

A composite gasket will seal better than the steel shim gasket.  A composite gasket will drop your already low compression even lower.

You will do fine either way, really.

These were mine on November 24th - they were not sealing, and the engine had been run too warm a couple of time.  All is good now.

Either gasket will work fine for your application.  Do not coat the gaskets with supplemental sealer - install them clean and dry, directly out of the package.  For review: Purchase new head bolts.  Chase all of the block head bolt holes.  Make sure that the cylinder head guide pins are installed in the block.  Apply ARP Teflon or similar thread sealant to the head bolt threads, since they penetrate the water jackets.  Apply an even, slow pull on the torque wrench.  Torque the head bolts following the factory sequence in three stages (i.e., ~50%, ~85%, 100%).  Retorque all the bolts to 100% a second time.

thanks guys.

a new set of head bolts are on my list. but ive heard from a few different people that you should dip the head bolts in oil to lube them so they torque readings are more accurate. but not a word about sealer on them. but i do like the sound of sealing them

ive done tons of reading and watched a bunch of youtube videos and been trying to gather as much good info and weed out as much bad info as possible.

i would love to do this right the first time around and never have to do it again. on this engine anyway 8)

The ARP PTFE Thread Sealer also serves as a torquing compound to decrease thread friction.  Use it in lieu of oil.  Apply a small amount under the flange of the bolt heads, as well.
