Chasing squeaks in my 78 c15 heavy half fleet side
« on: December 20, 2014, 01:02:56 pm »
Hey guys n gals!
My 78 heavy half has started making an incredibly annoying squeaking sound while I drive.

It sounds like it is by my left foot (towards the drivers side front wheel). It gets faster as the truck goes faster, does not squeak at stop or in park.

Thoughts? Things I should check? Things I should grease? Things I should replace? Any and all help is appreciated!

Sounds like it could be a bearing or the wheel hub assembly could be warped.

does it stop or quite when you press the brakes?

I'm afraid it does not stop or quiet down when I break. It is silent under 5 mph but otherwise "squeak squeak squeak" also, there is no feedback to the steering wheel. Would I get some if the wheel hub was warped?

Not necessarily. I currently live in japan and drive a prelude, my front disc brakes constantly become warped, no idea as to why, and there is no vibration or subtle changes in steering when I brake. It does occasionally squeak.

After driving a bit today it really sounds like it might be inside the cab. Any source of squeaking from inside?

could be sheet metal rubbing fender/cab, maybe a body bushing

If a body bushing could do it, I'm pretty sure that's where it's coming from. I need to get a new set all around and report back

Speedometer cable.

I've heard of speedometer cable noise, but I haven't heard it described as squeaking that gets slower or faster based on vehicle speed. If that is a possibility I would certainly believe that is it. My speedometer has not been reading accurately, I will check the thread on here and fix that and report back.
