Need help on Silverado
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:15:29 am »
Hi, I was looking for some help on my 1985 Chevy Silverado C10. And please forgive me for any mistakes or anything as I am completely new to the automotive mechanic world. This truck belonged to my mom, she bought the truck in about 1990, second owner, maybe 30,000 miles on it. When she bought this truck it was the original frost white with burgundy interior. Had a 5.0 Chevy V8 with the 400 automatic transmission, a Holley carburetor (I don't know what cfm, just know it had a Holley) and the posi trac rear axle. This truck was incredibly nice once but over time, people swapping parts thinking my mom wouldn't notice, and mistreating my mom's truck its where it's at now. My step dad tried to fix it up and.... we got it running. I'm doing the body work to it and plan to repaint it white and I would like to restore it back to the way it used to be. I know that the original posi trac is gone. Has a replacement that we found at a junk yard, I don't know the gear ratio. I just know it only burns one tire. The Holley carb is gone, right now it has a Quadrajet and the 400 transmission was shot. Now it has a 700 transmission (according to my step dad). Any help would be nice. Thank you.

Quadrajet is the BEST carb for our trucks. A rebuild is DEAD simple and takes a days worth of time and its amazing how much better they run.

I would like to bring this truck back to the way it used to be. I want something fun and comfortable to drive, but can take off and win a race too. Like I said I don't know much about mechanics, I guess I'm just more or less looking for ideas, tips, tricks, anything really. I don't know what all I should keep on this truck and what all I should change. Like the 700 transmission, is that something I should keep or I should go back to the 400? And what kind of a difference does having a 700 instead of a 400 make? The rear axle too, I've heard that you can buy posi gears and just put them inside of your axle, is that the best way to go or should I just look for an old posi? I've been told that the carb is burning too rich a fuel mixture. Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

The 700. If that's what's in it has overdrive , much better for all around driving
The rear axle gears are very difficult to set up
Leave that to a Pro

Not gonna win many races with a old pickup
Unless you spend a large pile of cash on an engine and major suspension improvements

A new minivan has more HP and handles way better
