I bought a 86 305 to put in my truck so I could drive it and I got the casting number off the back of the block and the suffix code off the front. The suffix code doesn't make the block and I was wondering what that meant.

confused about your question. the suffix code doesnt make the block?
are you saying the suffix code doesnt match up to the casting numbers?

could be a reading error on your part or a typo lol. see if you can post good pictures. what i do is take soap stone or a crayon on the suffix code and rub the area down really good then wipe it clean and it should only leave crayon in the concave parts. then for casting numbers i just lightly rub the raised areas and it highlights the letters and numbers

1986 305
Flint(v) Feb(02) 04(day)    1980 350 (UFC) suffix code

ONE NOTE: Casting #'s will trump the code on a descrepancy. Take the above CLJ example. In 1987 CLJ is a 305 L69 in a monte carlo, or in 1971 it's a 400 from a monte carlo. So when the arguement over 305, 350 or 400 comes up... now you look at the casting #. 3970010.... bang, it's a 350. That eliminates the 400 and 305 possibilities.

if your codes are right i would go with 1986 305 (casting numbers)
