Replacing windshield.
« on: August 25, 2015, 12:26:22 pm »
Hey guys. So a branch fell from a tree and shattered my windshield. I've been looking online and at junkyards and not finding a) anything in my price range at the moment b) anything that will fit my 77 C10. Anyone found a good place for replacement glass? Sorry if this is a repeat thread.

The good news is anything from 73-87 or the 88-91 R/V series fit.  Good used ones are hard to come by. I've gotten them out in one piece about 50% of the time

One thing I forgot to mention was the antenna on the 88-91 were on the fender and not built into the windshield

I've bought several from my local glass guy new for $150 cash? Kinda can't monkey with a used one for that.

X2! But that's why I pay extra for full glass coverage on my insurance! Then you don't have to worry about things like that!  ;)

We have a windshield shop next the self-service yard here. They go in, find the windshield you need and put it in for a lot less. They also have a bunch on hand as well. Been awhile since I was there, but it was the cheapest by far.

Guys that have had windshields replaced in their 3rd gen. trucks...did the shop block the factory drain holes in the windshield channel with adhesive?  Did you talk about these drain holes with the shop?  Did you even know about them?

When I had the windshield in my '77 K20 replaced I put in a new seal, new chrome locking strip and of course a new windshield, they bonded-in the windshield and ended-up blocking those holes.

I thought our windshields were held in with the rubber weatherstrip and no adhesive was required? As far as I know, no adhesive was used on my truck when the windshield was replaced. I had mine done by Safelite in my driveway. We had a big snowstorm the day before and my truck sits outside in the elements unprotected. It was very cold the morning they did mine and they had it done within an hour. They reused my windshield rubber too. It's been almost a year since then and I've had zero problems with it or with the drain holes. My truck has stayed high and dry! I also get lots of leaves and pine needles in my cowling, but I make sure to keep it as clean as possible.

Hmmmmm there's no reason for any adhesive if installed properly ? Kinda confused. And I didn't anything about holes.

I have to take mine in for a seal replacement soon.

Is this going to be an issue?

I'm a little biased (as I work for one) but I believe in supporting your local glass guys.  To do this body style of truck costs $185 and that's installed and in Canadian dollars.  Then you get a semblance of a warranty as well.

No need for any butyl or urethane with the old square bodies.  The rubber and your chrome or black locking strip hold it in place.  A decent glass shop will check those holes for pine needles, dirt etc so they drain properly.  (We would anyway)

Just mention that you need a new seal next time you get a windshield and it should be no problem, we are still able to get new rubbers and locking strips.  All Precision brand.
