resolving Hood vibration
« on: November 11, 2008, 12:44:26 pm »
On my 82 swb, I noticed that the hood seems to show a lot of vibration. When I open the hood, I also noted that the hood cross bracing is somewhat separated from the bottom hood sheet metal.

Is there a what to bond these two pieces together? Some kind of putty maybe?

Vince, Go to an autobody supply store, ask for some urethane seam sealer. While your there, get a couple wood paint sticks. Slide the stick between the frame & the top layer & squeeze a little gob in beside it, then pull the stick out. Move on to a new area & repeat as needed. Lorne

Mind if I bump this?

I've been having a similar issue.

When driving on the highway I notice my truck shakes a lot. The back of the hood where it meets the cowling can bee seen vibrating. Aren't there supposed to be some kind of rubber bumpers/grommets in that area that the hood rests on?

It's an 1981.  And yes, I do have those four.

Nothing in back/center where the wiper-fluid nozzles are. That's where it vibrates, but I suppose that is normal? There are some small empty screw-holes in that area and I wondered if any sort of OEM or MOD rubber grommet could go there (similar to the large ones in the front near the hood-latch).  I'd like to post a picture but it's too dark out now.

Thanks.

There is a rubber seal that goes across the rear of the hood. Yours may be missing. Not sure if the seal would prevent vibration but worth looking at.

Here's a pic of the underside of my hood. I can see a row of holes. Is that what you are referring to? Did the truck come from the factory with seal there? Are they good to have... pros/cons?  (I notice Classic Parts sells a "Hood to Cowl Seal")

It goes on the cowl not the hood.  It was optional on what it would have came on.  It appears your didn't come with it.  It is not going to stop any vibrations though.
I sell all the weatherstripping for these truck BTW.

Thanks. I see them here: ClsscPrts, and thought it might dampen the back of the hood where is vibrates up and down a little.

What were these seals for?

I kind of have that problem too, not the seals though. It shouldnt get wet under there, what about using wood shims??   When i press on the top of my hood it pushes down a little until it hits the frame. I always thought it was an after market.  Wait, what other seals are there other than the cowl to hood?
