Rebuilt Qjet
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:57:46 pm »
So I purchased a rebuilt qjet from National Carb. in FL. to replace the warped one on my 78 dually w/454. This motor has 041 heads. Original unit (I think, on it when I bought it 20 yrs. ago) is 17055748, 800 cfm for sure, M4MC I believe. So the replacement they sent is casting #17085226, 800 cfm, which from info. I can find says it is M4MED electronic controlled. But the one I got has a different air horn, or modified, I'm not sure but definitely not electric. Power piston is sticking intermittently. Not cool. I'm concerned about mismatched parts. Have not run it, considering returning it as my gut is telling me it's not right. But it may be fine?? Also seems most of these mid 80's carb's came off of 305-350 SB's, no indication of 454, but this one is 800cfm. Any body know if they made this casting # non electronic? Give me your thought's please. Thanks.

M4MED dual capacity pump, electric choke but not electronically controlled.
An E at the beginning would be an electronic carb.
The castings after 79/80 are single main air bleeds and 800 cfm.
Don t get caught up in that 750 or 800 difference is negligible.
You can use it but I personally would not  use a commercially rebuilt generic fits all carb but that's just me.
Quads are not fits all carbs.
And yes could be mismatched parts.
You would be better off with SMI or maybe a summit quad.
Did you give up the original carb for a core?

Thanks for the reply blazer 74. I still have original. It's really what I want to use of course. Won't ever give it away. Power piston in rebuild was just sticking on some junk. It's working OK. Think I will keep it and run it while I send the original to Cliff Ruggles for a fix up. They say they can take care of warping if it is necessary. But they are backed up about 10 mo. or so. Don't want to be without truck that long.

Good Choice using Cliff, for the original carb.
He'll be the first to tell you he won't even touch a commercially reman carb.
