The old 76 may be leaving. Questions on possible trade.
« on: January 23, 2005, 10:06:00 am »
One of my local mud buddies wants my 76 Scottsdale to use for mudding and wants to lift it.  He wants to trade me for his I believe it is a 1983 Silverado.  It has new doors, new cowl hood, and a new tailgate and 35" boggers that are almost new.  The known problems are; too tall for safety inspection due to the 3" body lift which he lifted the bumpers to mach, the lift will be removed and it will just have a 6" suspension lift with 33's(mine, brand new).  It has a leaking transmission line, but it still drives fine.  THe engine runs really well, but is supposed to be a recent rebuild with under 5000 miles on it.  Mine is a 1976 Scottsdale with a 2" body lift, rebuilt engine with 250 miles on it.  I am putting the 33's on it that I got with the truck.  It has a few qwerks.  For one, the radio was HOT wired, which kept the clock, but you could take the key out and the truck would keep running until you shut the radio off.  The fuel gauge still won't work, and the transmission(TH350) make a whining noise in first gear, but still outpulls most anything.  The good points to mine are; new hood from a 1980 with no rust, new fenders, new doors, new bedsides, completely rebuilt front end, 6 leave stock heavy half springs, which almost make it look lifted as is.  new tailgate, new rear window(slider), and good tires.  It also has brand new headers and a new dual exhaust kit.  The headers are dynomax standard, flowtech 2.25 dual exhaust kit, flowtech raptor mufflers.  The exhaust cost about 400 bucks.  Anyway, would it be fair to tell him I want $500.00 cash if he wants the engine from my truck instead of having him and I swap the truck engines.  I hope he agrees to this because it is going to be cold for the next few weeks, and these two trucks have to be kept outside as they are too tall.

Well, I have more details now.  It is a 1987 Silverado K-10.  350 engine, 2800 stall converter with TH350.  Headers and 4 foot of 3" straight pipe.  It idles like a drag racer because of the cam in it.  It has a new carb, torker intake, new distributer, and an NP208 T-case with new Warn Lockouts.  It has a 6" suspension lift and a 3" body lift.  The guy drove my truck yesterday and simply stated that it was very snappy, even for a new engine that has not worked in yet.  I get to drive his today.  His does need a new front drive shaft, oh well, I will remove it and just use 2 wheel drive for now.  I will give more details as I get them.  Oh yeah, the paint is rattle can black.  The truck was built by KC Customs and was the owner's truck.  I will add a link to some pics when I get the time.

I drove the truck today and it runs very, very well.  It is also very loud.  The axles are 373's.  The rear is a corporate 12 bolt posi-track.  The front end is a Dana 44 with removable spring mounts.  The alternator is cocked and squeels, but I know how to fix that.  Each cab corner has a spot of rust on it which will be fixed with bondo.  The top of the cab has a dent in it, but that is also easily reparable.

Okay, the black demon is mine.  I did some checking last night and found that the truck's cab and title are from a 2 wheel drive truck.  The insurance is not going to be bad, about $76 per month.  I went ahead and insured it even though it is not done and ready for inspection yet.  I am going to use glasspacks for now.  However, having found that Flowtech Raptors are junk and leaky, I would appreciate any ideas on what exhaust to use, I want it legal, but I want is as loud as possible.  None of the inspection sites around here mess with emissions, so that is no problem.  The original 700r4 is gone and was replaced.

if you want flowmaster i'd go with sound master or the 1800 series mufflers found at your local Napa store. They are cheaper and from what i can tell have the same tone

Yes, the flowtech Raptors are what I am talking about.  They don't really sound any different than stock.  In my opinion, they are junk, but I have only ever had the one set, so they may be okay.  The black demon is going to get Magnum glasspacks.  It will be a mud runner and work truck with 9" of total lift, not much God for anything else.
