tranny not installed right i think
« on: February 14, 2005, 11:23:00 pm »
well its been a while since i have worked on my muder. last time i was ready to test drive it but the clutch didnt seem right. I tried starting it up Saturday and nothing happened, i checked and cleaned the connections and still nothing. pulled the starter and that works great. the tranny turns freely in nutrual (muncie 4 speed). checked the motor to see if its locked up but not sure. i went to spin it over and found the harmonic balancer bolt loss so i tightened that and didnt dare to wrench on it anymore in fear of snaping the head.

With that all said, where do i begin again to figure out the problem with the truck. The clutch is a 18 months old and never removed, the clutch fork is set properly as far as i can tell as well as the throw out bearing. which brings me to an other question. in chevyduty they show 2 throw out bearing one for 73-75 which is 1 7/8 in tall and another for 73-84 that is 1 1/4 tall would this make the difference if i had the taller bearing? i think that covers it, if i cant figure it out soon, i'm going to drop in a th350 instead

the wrong throwout bearing will cause problems, if it is too long for the app, it will have the clutch partially engages, if too short it won't engage properly.

If you got a clutch kit this shouldn't be a problem if you got the correct application.

Will the starter not turn the motor over?  If it has been sitting a while the pieces can "freeze" together.

It sounds as though the clutch assem is stuck together.  Mine did that once after I let it sit for a while.  To get it apart, I charged up the battery, set the charger on boost and held the brake and cranked it over.

As in trying to roll start it.  I would find out first why the clutch isn't operating correctly, but if you are out in the middle of nowhere and there is no chance of an accident, you could try it.

Can you spin the motor over at all without the tranny moving?  Do you have a flywheel wrench?

i ahvent tryed turning the motor over at the flywheel. i dont have a flywheel wrench either. i tried again at the front of the motor and it was a no go, i have reparked this truck and pulled the motor apart one my other one i bought late fall. the other truck needs new/different heads and it will be set, and then back to the tranny issues

the mudding season is hear i still dotn have a good running truck yet. i pulled the tranny and t-case out of my mudder and realized the throwout bearing was installed backwards (dumb mistake) got everything back together 4 hours later (after supper) and the clutch works like it should, motor will turn over. the drivetrain is done except to top the fluids. my next task is to finish rewiring everything. started that and soon ran out of wire.

thanks for your help guys
