Good place to get cheap crate engine
« on: July 20, 2007, 04:15:53 pm »
The 350 in my truck is dieing a slow death and I'm tired of messing with it. Is there a good place on the net to order a replacement. Just looking for another 350 small block...something simple and cheap. Suggestions?

try your local Autozone or the like. Long blocks typically range in the $1200-$1400 range.

Talk to your local GM car dealer.  Some GM crates can be pretty inexpensive, depending on what you're looking for and they are backed by a warranty. Just shop around.  YOu may have a local engine builder in your neighborhood as well.

I ordered mine from AZ.  I live in VA and they paid for shipping. http://www.delbridge.net/install

Can't beat a Goodwrench 350 #10067353 ($1379.95 @ sdparts.com).  3 yr. / 50,000 mi warranty.  Decent power too.  I'm in the (slow) process of putting one of these in my '85.

If the truck/car did not originally come with a 350, then the warranty is 1yr/12,000 miles.  But that's still good.

I have a Good Wrench crate engine as well. $1299.00 taxes and everything, I bought it at my local Chevy dealer. They will not honor the warranty if you install the engine in a Non-Gm product..........like a 53 F*rd truck.
1984 GMC Sierra. Air Bagged but mostly stock.

$1299 is awesome for a local dealer.  All the dealers here in Houston want around $1600-1700 (thats before tax).  And they tell me they are cutting me such a great deal because the MSRP is $2100.  I just laugh at them.

Oh and to answer the original post.  I was wrong you can beat a 350, but not with a AZ motor.  If you have a little time, build yourself a 383 out of your current 350 core.  If I weren't starting with a 305, that's probably what I would do.  And I believe SgtDel would agree with me on this one.

+1 on the 383 and heres a little gift.

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/3176,109_Economy-Rotating-Assemblies.html

They have rotating assemblys for $370, and an option to balance and all that jive. After that have a machine shop punch out the block and put her together. You will be in for about $800-$900 if you get the balance on the kit. And that leaves room for some vortec heads and a manifold...maybe even a summit cam kit ;). Just my $.02

Or, if you wanted to start with a 305, you can get a 383 type of kit for a 305.  I would actually kind of like to see one of those.
