Ah, the good old days
« on: July 14, 2008, 08:45:34 pm »
Folks, this wasn't that long ago.  I was looking at a file of my old digital pics that I have on my computer labelled September 06.  This is an interesting pic from that file....

I found a receipt under my seat a a few weeks ago for $1.79 a gallon.  Not sure when it was, but I remember thinking "man, that wasn't so long ago."

I keep a log, and have beens for 12 years, each time I fuel up.  I have a little notebook in my trucks. I record gallons, cost, and mileage.  I may pull it out and check, say 5 years ago, and see.

I recall when I was on my honeymoon in 2002, I remember when I was on Martha's Vineyard--the little island off of Cape Cod which has very few vehicles but lots of bicycles, the price was incredibly expensive.  So expensive, I took a picture of the gas pump because I knew no one would believe me at how expensive the gas there was....well, here it is.........

Ya know its really sad that we look at $1.99 a gal as a good deal not to show my age but I remeber when I started driving I think it was around .84 cents a gal. Man those were the days. You could fill up 2 or 3 times a week and drive anywhere.

I saw a commercial today on TV.  It looked like a political commercial, but, when it said at the bottom, "paid for by T. Boone Pickens" I thought, this guy really is throwing his money out to influence an election.  I had to pull up his website.  This is what I found.  Wow!  We are sending 700 billion dollars a year to the Middle East.

I don't know of any other commodity, especially a major one that impacts everyone, that is as volatile as gasoline prices. In 1999, I remember buying it as low as 27.9 cents a liter. That's $1.06 per gallon! Sure the bottom had dropped out of oil and 5 years prior to that, I was paying 50 cents a liter but even still. How does something in 9 years go up over 500% in price (gas is on avg. about 1.50/l or 5.68/gal) and there is no gov't action against it? Heck, the province next to me is the world's 2nd largest producer (Alberta)!

Even from last year, gas has gone up around 50% ($1/l to 1.50/l). Inflation is less than 10% of that rate. It just gets me so mad. There is somebody somewhere that decides when to hike the prices. Sure we can't have gas all the time to be as cheap as it was in 1999, but I would be happy with anything under 80 cents a liter ($3/gal). I could fill my then-new Dakota R/T for $22. Now my 05 Magnum RT takes $90 to fill and I just let the pump auto-stop on my 03 Tahoe at $100. I would probably throw a fit if I let it fill all the way but we have pre-pay pumps here only and they have a limit of $100, otherwise you have to do 2 transactions.

I always completely fill up my tanks when fueling--mainly because I keep track of gas mileage and stuff.  I always have to use two transactions now to fill up my suburban.  My card company stops transcations at $100 and I usually have another $30 to go for the second transaction.
