Stepside fenders
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:23:53 pm »
Hey all,
Another newbe. I have a 81 K20 LWB stepside (350 4-speed w/granny low) with under 30,000 miles. The truck is all original except for the dual exhaust and headers I did at the beginning of the year. I still have the manifolds, smog pump and the old exhaust. This truck used to be the fire and emergency truck for the Dupont plant in Delaware and still has the lettering on the doors. I bought it from my uncle who still works there and was told that he's never seen it leave the grounds which explains the low miles. There's a baseball sized hole on the drivers side floor and the normal rust in the fenders.I've owned the truck for 3 years and it pulls my landscaping trailer.
I'm trying to plan a rebuild for next winter and am having trouble locating a reproduction left rear fender. It looks just like the ones on the short bed but has the square gas door on this side. My only other option if I can't find one is to find a patch panel for the wheel opening(haven't found that yet either). I will try to post pics once I figure out how to do it. Thanks

no one reproduces that fender  GM made it up until about 3 years ago and stopped making it.  Of course it cost me $480 to get one...

You've got to be kidding me!? I never would've thought for a truck that's not that old. I appreciate the reply. Maybe i'll get lucky and find a patch panel or a donor from a shortbed. Thanks for the info Captkaos.

Hey Hotrod,
I was just reading your thread on rust repair. That's long.

When the time comes it's definitely an option. I could buy something like that and part out what I don't use.

FYI: This will be my test dummy with a welder and patch panels. I'm a little anxious to get started. Thanks

Hey VileZambonie,
Thanks for the link. You know that's the first one i've seen online for sale since I started looking 6 months ago. They seem to be very rare but at the same time not very desired either. If that truck was a few hours closer and still there in about 9 months that would be ideal. Thanks again.
