California Emissions HELP
« on: December 19, 2009, 02:33:20 am »
I've been lurking around this forum reading alot of good information so I decided to join and ask a few questions.

Okay, I have an 86 Silverado with a fresh 305 in it, rebuilt stock carb and rebuilt 700r4. I installed this new engine in my truck earlier this week and all these dang emissions hoses and lines are hideous. It looks like spaghetti under my hood.

So this is what I'm asking. What can I get rid of and still pass smog here in California. If someone could post up a picture with arrows to the different things I can eliminate that would be great. I'm referring to the vacuum lines.

Or I guess this could be the question. What is essential for me to pass smog on my truck.

You could change the label but it would have to match the year

The VIN, Title, Insurance Card etc would all have to match too.

Hey what's up from San Jose Cali.

Well to give you some ideas that some of us in cali do is

1) buy a pre '74 truck or diesel truck and use the parts  like the cab, bed, . I have a 1980 cab on my 1974 frame and its still a 1974   ::)

2) Find some guy to help you smog it for you

just goggle vin plate fraud
not sure about how good your paint job is but i think it would be better just to switch out the whole cab and then change the sticker if thats needed. about slow your truck has a 1980s cab and 74 plate so you drilled holes in the door jam for that? what about the wholes in the dash, not saying someone is going to look but what about if something does happen and someone notice it you lose your truck and you go bye bye for a little bit. think how everyone that is under goggles search for vin plate fraud got caught just my 2 cents.

Swapping a cab and putting the plate on there isn't something I'd lose sleep over especially in a modified old truck. A newer car for theft purposes yes I'd be concerned but you know how many people swap cabs and frames and take two or 3 trucks to make one? You think the idiots at DMV can comprehend sll this? All they know is stock. For these trucks, to me swapping parts and having a matching vin and title is all that should matter.

i can understand about swapping parts i mean your suppose to report all that but who does but what I'm saying if you have to drill cut  or rivet something that doesn't belong there in the first place i wouldn't do it i know this old man up the road he switches Vin's and tag if he wants to drive a diffrent truck and hes got away with it. but its just not something i would do key word there "i". i don't want someone on here thinking switching Vin's is OK and there ain't no punishment behind it, thats all. and my truck has one cab from 70s frame from who knows and the bed from a 80's but the vin in the cab is all that matters as long as its still there and not tampered with, i tend to get a bit nervous with the law even when I'm not doing anything wrong, my wife is always getting on me cause when ever I'm driving i pass a cop i always have to watch till i cant see him no more just in case he turns around lol

The VIN in the cab on the dash is going to determine what year the truck is. If the VIN on the registration paper doesnt match the dash VIN, your gunna be answering some questions to the cops. Ive had cops compare the VIN on the registration paper to the dash VIN and then of course the registration paper to the license plate. How do you have a 80 cab but 74 regs? Change over the VIN plate? I know its only two rivets.

The only way to legally get around not smogging your vehicle in California is to own one pre 1975, own a motorcycle, own a diesel, or live in a part of a county that doesnt require it. Go to the CA DMV website and you can find out which counties dont require smog. I think there is 3 or 4. It goes by population within a county or zip code.

it more than two your 80's Vin will be in the dash (2) rivets while your 74 will be on the door jam (4) and they're not reg rivets usually you can just pick them up from a resoration shop. get this dodge actually put their Vin's in the dash pad to swap reg all you had to do was swap pads.
