1973 1 ton chassis rotors questsion
« on: May 17, 2010, 05:30:14 am »
We are the lucky owners of a car hauler built on a 1T chassis that was put into life as a county truck in Minnesota.  The problem is that the brakes are dragging on 1 side and the brake shop said we need new rotors.  But they are having trouble finding the right ones.  Have tried 2-3 different ones, but they say all bind on the back side.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This truck is supposed to make a 6 hour trip (1way) in 2 weeks to rescue a car from northern Michigan!!!  HELP!!!

take some pictures of the axles and post them maybe that would help is it a 4x4 ? dually? also how bad are the rotors? maybe you could just replace the caliper or hoses

Right now the truck is disassembled at the tire shop.  Will be bringing it home tomarrow or Wed.  We are just going on what they are telling us - my work schedule has been heavy - not much for days off that is why I am having them do the work.  I had bought hoses for them to put on and that is when we got the word the rotors need to be replaced.  Just wondering if anyone had run across the same thing.

when you have older trucks parts tend to be swapped out or upgraded and that part never came in the year truck. so most the time even with my truck i have to take the part to autozone and they will start pulling items that it could be and we will just match them up one at a time takes a littel time but most the time it all we can do. also you could get the rotors turned down a little cheaper than buying the rotors around here its like 18 bucks. but if you cant find the part it will save you

Latest update on truck rotors.  The "reputable" tire shop that has the truck held hostage said O'Rielly's and Carquest didn't have any books that went back to 1973, so that is why they are having troubles.  It took my husband 20 minutes to look up in Hollander what the # should be and another 30 minutes to drive to Bumper to Bumper to find out they can get it next day if they know by 5:00!!  Tire shop left a message on our answering machine that another rotor came in late yesterday and they will know this morning if it will work or if we have to order from B to B.  Hubby said there must have been fairly recent turnover in help at the tire shop - he didn't know any of the mechanics and he used to know them all.  They must not know how to run the computer either (as well as an interchange manual).  Hopefully the truck will be fixed this weekend and the mystery will be solved.  Thanks for all your help and words of wisdom.  I guess that is why we like older vehicles - they are a true testof wisdom and patience!!!
