Air Conditioning Rebuild???
« on: August 09, 2010, 02:44:26 pm »
I have an 88 1 ton dually that has stock air conditioning. The great thing is that everything is there, but the fittings going to the condenser are cracked off. I know it will take a new condenser, however I am concerned with the systems being open to the elements for maybe 10 years, what is the likelyhood that I could even get it up and running again? Are there some steps that I should take, or things to check before throwing money into a condenser and pulling a vacuum, and finding out that it doesn't work. A bulletized checklist would be awesome, and I would like to keep this under $500 if at all possible.

The acuumulator has a desicant bag (silica gel) that absorbs moisture. Like that little package in your beef jerky that says do not eat. That needs to be replaced if the system has been left open.  Everything else can be flushed and vacuumed.
its from another post about my 94. So that's all that you need from it LOL as do as vile said there replace the accumulator flush and vacuum the system the part number for the vacuum pump from autozone is 90059 they have a part number but its wrong that's the part number its 200 to rent but its only a deposit you get all that back when you return it ist also get the hoses and gauges they don't come with it I think you can rent them too and they sell flush there too I think its 8 bucks can't remember then get the Retro fit kit think its 5 and the freon and oil think someone else can tell you what type of oil to use so you will need I think close to 400 at first but it will end up costing you around 200-250 not sure of your prices for the parts. Flush the system first then replace your parts don't flush the new compressor and accumulator no need and your not supposed to anyway. Close the system use new o rings now cause yours are probably dry rotted anyway. And vacuum the system for at least 30 min and again someone else has to tell you how much and were you need to add the oil along wig the freon how much to add

Not mentioned(I don't think) was the orifice tube. It should also be replaced. (See pic)
