Selectro manual locking hubs
« on: November 24, 2010, 02:27:06 pm »
Anyone ever seen any of these? Are they basically the same as the others as far as taking them apart? Thanks for any info.

I've never had a set of those apart, but they were somewhat common on older FJ-40's and such. Milemarker used to sell them with the Selectro name, and you can still get them from some places. I would guess that they are a simple, durable design like any other manual locking hub. I'd advise you to take a similar approach as you would with rear drum brakes: If you're not sure, just do one at a time so you can go look at the other side to see how it goes back together 8)
What axle are these on?

Grim, I have looked at Milemarker website and do not see any that look like these. The axle is just an ordinary 10 bolt as far as I can tell. This is my first 4x4 and I was curious as to what I have. I have never seen any like them before.

I never seen them before either. They almost look like they were not made for that.  Seems like water could get into the bearings. are they a full turn or quarter turn to engage.

I googled them and got some information on them.  Seems the were made in the 70s and 80s for jeeps as stated and scouts and broncos. Maybe more.  The did say however they were sometimes called grenades or ejectos because sometimes under load they would fly off.

These are on my 85 K10    It would be nice to find an exploded view of these hubs.

They are still available under the Milemarker name. I don't know about their track record from first hand knowledge, but they aren't stock OEM, and they're not cheap, so anybody (previous owner) that would have converted to them must have thought they are the real deal. Other than that I don't know any more about them. I like to use WARN hubs myself. If you rip into them I would be curious to see what they look like when you have them all apart. You might just have to pioneer this one and see what you're dealing with.

You're right, they are not cheap. Somebody must have been impressed by them or got them free. I do not see anywhere in that chart that Say's they were made for a 1985 Chevy or GMC. So far no problems with them. You know what they say " if it ain't broke,Don't fix it " so I guess if no one comes along that knows about these,it will remain a mystery for now.

 Thanks, Patrick
