1980 k10 th350 to sm465 swap
« on: October 08, 2012, 07:05:28 pm »
OK so I'm a new member and I'm doing a th350 to sm465 swap. I have everything i need and the transmission is in but when i put it in low the shifter hits the dash. Anyone ever have this problem? Is there different shifters for different trucks?

A friend of mine had the same problem (can't remember if it was the seat or dash though) he used a torch and just bent his some at the bottom to correct it

I don't think you are. He also had a 3" body lift that caused part of it

I have never heard of that, did you have to move anything?  engine, trans mount?  The SM465 was the same on all the 73-87(91) trucks.

Do you have a lift kit on it?

No lift kit but that got me thinking. My rear cab mounts are bad and if the rear of the cab is sagging down, it would move the shifter closer to the dash.

Sure would. Maybe try to jack it up some and chck it out before modifying the shifter?

OK, made some progress this weekend. I started to install the 205 transfer into the truck. I took it apart to inspect and resealed it. Then I realized that the spline count was different than the trans. That's handy. So I was forced to use my other 205 but now my drive shaft isn't going to work. Anyway the transfer case is in so I moved to the body mounts. I got new poly mounts for $60. I got all the old mounts out but ran out of time. Pictures coming soon

By the way does anyone know if the cross member is the same for both auto and manual? The Auto cross  member seemed to work.

update. I installed new cab mounts and the shifter still hit the dash. I also got the clutch master cylinder in along with linkage. When everything was together i started the truck pushed the clutch and tried to shift and it wouldn't go into gear. After pulling the trans in and out four or five times and putting in shims no change. So i thought i had the wrong throw out bearing and decided to just go with stock linkage. I got all of that in and it was the same thing. It wouldn't go into gear.

Apparently when you get the clutch disc backwards the clutch wont release.
Anyway I just took the torch out and bent the shifter to clear. Now tomorrow I'm going to try and put everything together.
