transfer case problem
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:39:28 pm »
My 87 jumps out of four wheel frequently when mudding. Sometimes its easier to just prop my foot on it to hold it in four wheel drive. Everything else working great. Any ideas what needs attention?

Check the adjustment for the shift linkages.  At the same time check on the mount bushings.

Use your favorite spray lube on the pins and linkage . Hose out the shifter and lube the daylights out of it . Mudding has its own problems . mud may get in the shifter , When mud dries it will draw any lubrication out .

One thing to look at . Some times if your wheeling hard enough you can get lot of flex and the transfer shifter will be bumped out of gear with the floor pan . Mine I had to open the hole up and use a big hurst shifter boot .

like power said i seen them be touching the front of the floor pan, enough to engage but any shift in the trans/cab will cause it to pop out

That's a real possibility, most people don't even like riding with me offroad. They say I drive too fast. I'll be cutting hole out before hunting season. Thanks
