Replacing seals
« on: November 07, 2013, 07:28:55 am »
I've a 1975 GMC Sierra Grande with a 350, auto trans. Original everything. Clean truck. Engine is pretty strong but major oil leakage from front seal. Is it worthwhile to replace the seals----or hold until I either replace engine or rebuild?.....i can't do the work myself so replace seals will cost $$ for labor I guess.......worth it on an old engine?

If it runs fine and has good pressure you can drop the pan and replace the front seal and reinstall it if you have a good confidence level.

i believe the question is, how much oil is "major"?

Major oil leak--probably adding close to quart every 1 or 200 miles. I guess what I should do is check compression...and if that's good, count on the engine for a while, but put in new front seal? Is it true that I can put in a seal that's better than the original?
