Questions on distributors and tdc stuff.
« on: September 01, 2014, 11:57:49 pm »
I'm not trusting I have tdc. Balancer is at 0 but I can't get the distributor to point right at  #1. Only  a tad clockwise from it.
So I have questions. Is there a slot to place the dist. For every cylinder? Or just correct and 180 out?

And then I tried to put a dowel in the #1 plug hole to feel it go up and down to check tdc. Does the piston go up and down 2 times in a full rotation of the motor? Or did I feel it wrong.   If it's twice, which one is tdc?
Thanks in advanced

Put your thumb over the spark plug hole and turn the motor. When you feel air push out it is on the compression stroke. Yes the piston comes up twice per revolution. When you feel its on the compression stroke, verify the balancer mark is at 0°. That is tdc. Then set the distributor in to where the rotor points towards #1 cylinder. Get it as close as possible. If the distributor doesnt want to seat all the way, dont worry. There is a flat head key on the bottom of the distributor shaft that seats into the oil pump. Just bump the key a few times and it will line up and fall all the way into position. Then put the distributor cap on and connect the plug wires. Put the #1 cylinder plug wire on the post pointing at #1 cylinder. Then place the rest on in the correct order. Clockwise it goes 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. Then time it with a light to 10° with the vac advance hose unhooked from the distributor and plugged so there isnt a vacuum leak.

To prevent confusion, on 79C20's firing order, it is all correct except for the double 6. I noticed 7 was missing.  The order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,SEVEN,2. Again that's 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.
